The Dubai Racing Club on Sunday released the potential fields for Dubai World Cup Day (DWCD) on March 29 at Meydan. Among the possible starters are 36 Group 1 winners spread across eight races.
The world's richest raceday offers purses of $27 million, with $10 million earmarked for the world's richest race, the Group 1 Dubai World Cup.
Akeed Mofeed, successful in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup for owner Pan Sutong, is one of 16 possible contenders for the World Cup. The five-year-old bay son of Dubawi has thus far this season annexed the Group 3 Centenary Vase on February 2 and ran fifth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup on February 23, both at Sha Tin.
Also possible for the World Cup is multiple Group 1 heroine The Fugue, who just missed by a half-length when second in last year's Breeders' Cup Turf. The John Gosden-conditioned daughter of Dansili filled the third spot in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and would be making her five-year-old bow off a runner-up effort in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase on December 8 if she goes in the World Cup.
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor's charge Prince Bishop is another probable for the $10 million affair. The Dubawi seven-year-old ran well at this year's Carnival, capturing both the Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 and Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3.
Sixteen are also considered possible for the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic, including defending champion Cirrus des Aigles and Breeders' Cup Turf hero Magician. Cirrus des Aigles returned on March 4 to be fourth in a conditions event over the Polytrack at Chantilly.
Ten could line up in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free headlined by Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf queen Dank and last-out Group 1 Jebel Hatta scorer Vercingetorix.
The Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen attracted a possible 12-horse field, with Reynaldothewizard, Balmont Mast and Krypton Factor likely to renew their rivalry after running 1-2-3 in the 2013 edition. The trio already met back up in the Group 3 Mahab al Shimaal on March 8, where Reynaldothewizard finished second, Balmont Mast was fifth and Krypton Factor ran 11th.
A total of 12 might show up in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint. Defending champion Shea Shea just beat Ahtoug by a head in the Group 3 Meydan Sprint on March 8, and those two could line back up on March 29.
Fourteen were listed as prospective entrants in the Group 1 Dubai Gold Cup, with Cavalryman hoping for a second straight win in the race following a 5 1/2-length triumph in the Group 3 Nad al Sheba Trophy on March 1.
There are a pair of Group 2 events on DWCD, the UAE Derby and Godolphin Mile. In the former, 15 runners are considered possible while 14 might vie for a spot in the Godolphin Mile entry gate. Long John will be looking to complete the UAE Two Thousand Guineas/Derby double after taking the former race by 4 1/4 lengths on February 13. Shuruq and Variety Club were 1-2 in the Group 3 Burj Nahaar and could hook back up in the Godolphin Mile
