Los Alamitos Race Course cancelled live racing for the weekend of February 28 through March 2 following a heavy storm that soaked the Southland overnight and through early Friday morning. According to weather.com, there is a 100% chance of rain on Friday night in the Los Alamitos area with thunder also on the forecast. The storm, which has already dropped about two inches of rain, is expected to continue throughout the day on Saturday.
"Due to this heavy rain, we are erring on the side of caution and safety for the jockeys and horses," said track spokesman Brad McKinzie. "The track is safe, but we are playing it very conservatively because a lot more rain is expected this weekend. The track will be open for training on Saturday morning."
This is the first time that Los Alamitos has cancelled live racing due to rain since a torrential downpour walloped Los Angeles and Orange County in December 19, 2010. Los Alamitos will be open for daytime simulcasting over the weekend and nighttime simulcasting of harness racing from Cal Expo and Australia racing on February 28 and March 1. Los Alamitos will be dark for simulcasting on Sunday night.

wait a minute. this is Saturday. so did they cancel last night? if so, why is it safe for training on Saturday but not racing? sounds to me like another east coast type excuse for not wanting to race live and just keep the signal up so they can simulcast in other tracks.

I don't know. maybe the horse shortage is so bad they decided to take a week off when a reasonable excuse became available.

I don't buy that. the part they race on isn't the new section of the track. they race strictly on the old section. I understand its probably all new dirt so that everything matches up and coincides with each other, but still, if any one section would get "babied" it would be the new section. I think its just a case of keeping the track open for works is now more important then live racing to them.

They didn't even bother taking entries for Sunday and no night time simulcasting, although nothing much racing that night anyway. Overall it really seems like a very strange decision.
