A Baker’s Dozen goes postward in 2014 GII Fountain of Youth Stakes
It’s finally time for the “no messing around”, “It’s about time” 2014 Kentucky Derby Championship Series to get underway and this Saturday it will in the $400,000, GII Fountain Of Youth Stakes where 13 3yo’s will go to the post for this first 50-20-10-5 Derby Points race of this year’s derby trail season!
Commissioner, by A.P. Indy, will be the 3/1 m/l fav in here as he comes off a Jan 4th $75k 1x Oc win here at 1 1/8, run in a nice 1:50.3 beating Top Billing , by a neck in stretch duel last out! Don’t look for this to be up front early as the pp’s show he’s a closer type! T A Pletcher trained and will get a J R Velazquez, ride!
Top Billing , by Curlin, out of an A.P. Indy mare, is the 7/2 2nd choice on the m/l, after losing to Commissioner , on Jan 4th came back to win a different $75k 1x Oc on Jan 25th here this one at 1 1/16 mile circling the field coming 4w for the 2 3/4 lengths win in a solid closing performance worthy of his blood lines run in a crisp 1:42.3! A closer here too so no early speed here!
General a Rod , by Roman Ruler, won the Gulfstream Park Derby here last out on Jan 1st getting into a protracted stretch duel with Wildcat Red , and edging out his rival by just a head at the line in a nice refiring effort going a mile in 1:35.4. Possible early front-runner here on Saturday as he appears to like being in the early action and never off the board in 3 lifetime starts too!
Wildcat Red , by D’Wildcat, after settling for 2nd in that same G/P Derby came back to win the GIII Hutcheson Stakes here last out, winning by 4 3/4 lengths in an easy looking 1:22.1 time for the 7f distance. He too likes to mix it up a bit early on so look for him to be in the early vanguard! He’s Shugg McGaughy trained and Joel Rosario gets the mount here!
We Miss Artie, by Artie Schiller, is a GI winner last fall in the GI Breeders’ Futurity over the Keeneland poly. Finished 7th next in the GI B/C Juvenile and last out surrendered a stretch lead to finish 2nd here in the 100k Kitten’s Joy Stakes. Another Todd Pletcher trainee here and gets a Jersey Joe Bravo ride to boot. He can stalk or go out early as well!
Casiguapo , by Sightseeing, was 2nd in the GI Hopeful at Saratoga last summer then 4th in the GI Champagne Stakes next , then was 2nd in the GIII Delta Downs Jackpot 2 back. While this resume looks impressive he was well off the winner in all 3 races. He started 2014 in a 6f $75k 1x Oc dust-up here on Feb 2nd finished 5th and again finishing multiple lengths off the winner! Seems to have but a mild late kick and isn’t an early front-running type either!
C. Zee , by Elusive Bluff, came a nice 2nd in the GII Hutcheson Stakes last out and was 2nd in the Spectacular Bid Stakes here 2 back! Sort of a stalker/pouncer type but is trying 2-turns for the first time here!
Almost Famous , by Unbridled’s Song, in Pat Bryne trained and gets a Mr. Derby ride from that man Calvin Borel. He was 4th in the GII Holy Bull Stakes and 4th again in the $60k Street Sense Stakes a way off the winners of both. Has the obligatory Mdn and Alw diplomas but seems to want to go early then fade at crunch time so look for him to go winging early here on Saturday.
Medal Count , by Dynaformer, was 5th in the GIII Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland last fall, then finished 11th in the B/C Juvenile bat well off the winners of both. He was a last out winner of a Jan 12th $75k 1x Oc at 7 1/2 lengths in 1:32.1 by 1/2 length in a sharp closing finish. He’ll need that sharp closing finish again to even vie at the end here on Saturday!
East Hall , by Graeme Hall, has done all his racing here in south florida came 3rd by just a neck in the OBS Championship Stakes here in south florida last out. 2 back finished 3rd in the G/P Derby. He does seem to come late if he comes at all.
Best Plan Yet , by Hear No Evil, is another south florida son finishing 5th in the GII Holy Bull Stakes last out. 2 back he finished 9th in that same G/P Derby, but 3 back did win the $300k FSN Reality Stakes by 5 lengths.
Our Caravan , by Daaher, and Hesinfront , by War Front, are but Mdn winners to round out this 2014 edition of the GII Fountain of Youth Stakes!
