I'm studying now on how to call races without cursing
Monmouth Park Racetrack is now accepting applications for track announcer after the recent news that Larry Collmus has accepted the same position at Churchill Downs. “On behalf of everyone at Monmouth Park, I’d like to sincerely thank Larry for 20 amazing years as the voice of our track,” said Bob Kulina, president of Darby Development LLC, operators of Monmouth Park Racetrack. “During his time here, we’ve seen him ascend to the top of his profession and we wish him the absolute best of luck in the future. Our job now is to find the next rising star to be our voice for the next 20 years.” After calling his first race at Bowie Race Track in Maryland at the age of 18 and full-time stints at Birmingham Turf Club, Golden Gate Fields and Suffolk Downs, Collmus became Monmouth’s full-time track announcer in 1994. During his 20 years at the Jersey Shore, Collmus also became the voice of Gulfstream Park in South Florida in 2007, as well as the Triple Crown (2011) and Breeders’ Cup (2013) for NBC.
“I leave Monmouth Park with nothing but the fondest of memories,” Collmus said. “My 20 years at the Jersey Shore will be a time that I remember forever. Monmouth Park will always hold a special place in my heart and I want to thank all the people that I’ve worked with over the past 20 years. “I would also like to thank the New Jersey racing fans whose enthusiasm, love and support of Thoroughbred racing make Monmouth Park the special place that it is. I look forward to becoming one of those fans in July and August as I plan to continue making New Jersey my summer home.” Those interested in applying for Monmouth’s track announcer position are instructed to send a resume and DVD to: Monmouth Park Racetrack Attn: Announcer 175 Oceanport Ave Oceanport, NJ 07757 Applications must be received prior to Saturday, March 1.

Travis Stone from LAD got the job as of today. He is pretty good an was in the running to get the gig at CD when Luke passed away. Question is, does LAD hire Mirahmadi back? If so, he better bring plenty of cash or get an advance on his salary for next year at Oaklawn. That dude owes money all over Shreveport

He is pretty good, not too flamboyant or wordy. The state of track announcers these days is dismal. They all seem to want to over describe the races. Stone seems to be more straightforward. Hopefully being in the summer limelight won't ruin his style. Speaking of announcers and Louisiana, what's up with John Dooley? He used to be really good, now he's become one of those guys that over do it, too. Seems like every race he goes on about "as they run down the Fair Grounds backstretch" - does he think people really don't know what track they're watching? And another one he does all the time, a la Dave Johnson, "that's Seabiscuit with the white cap on the outside". The LAST thing I'm looking for when watching a race is the color of the jockey's cap. Finally, he's really lost a lot of his enunciation over the years. Does he eat a peanut butter sandwich before every race? ? I couldn't understand a couple of his calls on Saturday.

Dooley has his own style I guess. The guy at delta is pretty good and so is Wrona. When he was announcing at FG before Katrina and Dooley took over, I ran into him at Pat O Briens. He is pretty funny in person. Denman to me is "unlistenable" if there is such a word because he NEVER tells the times and it drives me nuts. Maybe its just me? :/

Mack - If it's not a word it should be! I used to like Trevor but not any more. He's lost a few steps and makes quite a few mistakes I'm glad Larry will be at Churchill - big improvement Monmouth Tabs Travis Stone as New Announcer Bloodhorse Travis Stone will be the new track announcer at the beginning of the 2014 Monmouth Park meet Saturday, May 10, according to an announcement from the Oceanport, N.J. track. Most recently the announcer at Louisiana Downs, Stone replaces Larry Collmus who served as the voice of Monmouth Park since 1994 and recently joined Churchill Downs as its announcer. "We're excited to have Travis join the Monmouth Park team," said Bob Kulina, president of Darby Development LLC, operators of Monmouth. "He's a talented race caller with passion and intelligence for the game. He will fit in perfectly with Monmouth, and we look forward to his exciting race calls this summer and for many years to come." Stone, 30, is a graduate of State University of New York at Oneonta and the Missouri Auction School. He was named track announcer at Louisiana Downs in 2006, a year after working as a TV analyst at Gulfstream Park. In 2007, Stone called a race at Monmouth Park as part of All-Star Announcer Day. "I'm beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to call at a racetrack with the illustrious history and tradition of Monmouth Park," Stone said. "I'm eagerly awaiting opening day and look forward to sharing my passion for the game with the New Jersey racing community." Photo: Bill Denver/EQUI-PHOTO Travis Stone

Up here @ Tundra Park (Canterbury Park) we have the former Bay Meadows track announcer Paul Allen. The guy has done real well for him self up here in MN and has a morning sports radio show, announces the Vikings on the radio & has a Vikes TV show as well besides his duties as track announcer/annalist. Far cry from his pre- Bay Meadow days where he was sleeping in his car

Kid, are you old enough to remember the first announcer at Canterbury Downs?

I feel differently old enough Geo. To be honest I didn't get into racing until 20+ yrs ago & caught the tail end w/ Julie Krone & Sandy Hawley. Answering your question, I haven't a clue- Mike Smith & Jamie Ness had their start there so a big name wouldn't surprise me.

Kid, I was a fan of his going back to the early 1970s - his name is Tony Bentley. I first heard him at Delaware Park in 1971. A couple of years later I went to the Fair Grounds and, after the changes were announced I thought to myself, "I know that guy". Checked the program and sure enough it was Tony Bentley. He stopped calling at Delaware Park when they closed for a few years in the 1980s. That's when he went up to Canterbury Park. When Delaware Park reopened he was already established up there so didn't go back.
I just loved his voice, the way he called the races, and his un-hysterical calls even in big races, although he did know when he was going an important race. When Spectacular Bid broke the Delaware Park track record for 1-1/16 mile in 1979 by about 15 lengths (still stands, by the way), it was just another race for him.
The last I heard him was one or two years of quarter horse races at the Fair Grounds, and doing some steeplechase meets in the mid-Atlantic, especially at Fair Hill.
One of my all-time favorites.

Nice story, who's your all time favorite? for me it has to be Davey Johnson with " And down the stretch they go" gives me shivers every time.
