A striding horse set atop an oval that includes the checkerboard pattern on the Maryland flag will serve as the logo for the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes. The Maryland Jockey Club unveiled the 2013 logo Friday. The Baltimore-based Leffler Agency handled the design for the 14th year in a row, this time under the auspices of its new creative branding division, brandNU Marketing. According to the a release from the MJC, which owns historic Pimlico Race Course, the logo draws clubhouse artwork derived from a nineteenth century painting of racing at the track. "We at Leffler and brandNU take pride in the diverse styles and practicality that the logos have achieved over the years,” said Bob Leffler, the president and owner of the Leffler Agency. “They must be bold enough to translate on television, simple enough to serve on credentials and badges and have the dynamism to sell as a feature of apparel.” Tickets for Preakness 138, set to be run May 18th, have been on sale since Oct. 15. Seating information and ticket reservation forms can be found at www.preakness.com/tickets. Renewals are being accepted through Jan. 15, 2013. from Baltimore Sun

Whew! That's a nice one, but I was a little nervous opening this message, thinking I'd be greeted by a half-naked mutation of a horse, cow, man, and rattlesnake.
