stories bouncing around about horses that have starved to death including one that was starved to death intentionally because the owner was behind in paying the bills
I don't know if it's true but hearing the name involved I would bet that it is
some crazy talk with some outfits not wanting to feed horses till the track owners give in as a sort of hunger strike welcome to the people of Illinois racing

apparently, according to the president of the IHHA, another sticking point is the tracks want to eliminate racing on Wednesdays

Aren't the purses based on a % of handle? Rarely, if ever, have I seen a dispute over purse size. Usually it's because of some discrepancy in the purse account itself.

it goes back to a bad purse recapture agreement the horsemen agreed to years ago if the handle does not reach a certain amount the horsemen owe the track money

Balmoral wants to eliminate Wednesday racing if and when racing ever starts up. Tuesday is the day the racing board rules upon that request.

Balmoral wants to eliminate Wednesday racing if and when racing ever starts up. Tuesday is the day the racing board rules upon that request. Balmoral's request was rejected today. But it looks like there may be a contract between the two Chicago area harness tracks and horsemen soon. www.harnessracing.com/news/illinoisboardturnsdownbalmoralrequest.htmlIllinois board turns down Balmoral request February 19, 2014 | Print View The Illinois Harness Horsemen's Association (IHHA) reported on its website Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 19) that a request by Balmoral Park to eliminate Wednesday racing was turned down by the Illinois Racing Board by a vote of 9-0 earlier in the day. The IHHA opposed the elimination of Wednesday racing while it continues to negotiate a contract with the Johnson family, which operates Balmoral and Maywood racetracks. "We sincerely hope that a contract can be negotiated and signed in the next several days," wrote IHHA president Dave McCaffrey on the association's website.

What I've been hearing is they really aren't close and a significant difference in the sticking points. Supposedly the racing board was going to put off calling the Wednesday thing for a vote until a future meeting. The IHHA president was adamant about having it called. Illinois racing is so messed up and it continues to slowly circle the drain.

Horsemen submitted a proposal that would include racing for a 10% purse cut. somehow I don't think that is going to cut it.

Since the year is already about 2 months old, they've already given up 16% of their annual purses.

first Saturday of the new season and Hawthorne has 55 entries for 8 races, how much begging and pleading did they have to do to fill those races

They've scratched down to 50 horses (thankfully no coupled entries) How many shipped up from Beulah?
This is what happens early in a meet for a "remote" track, nearest operating tracks I think are Beulah and Turfway. Suffolk has a similar problem, but in their case they generally cancel a few cards early in the meet.

I think only about 4 horses are shippers. I didn't expect to be betting Hawthorne but I will probably mess aroud with the late pick 4

You may not turn a profit, but at least the ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL won't cost much.

I think only around 7 of the trainers with a horse in today have had a starter in the last 30 days
