SENT TO ME FROM COOLMORE, THE MIGHTY SCAT DADDY HAD THE FIRST TWO PAST THE LINE IN THE G1 CHILEAN DERBY.
Ashford-based Scat Daddy’s first Chilean crop is now age three and firing in the turf classics as it suggested it would as dominating juveniles last season. The son of Johannesburg had the first two home in the El Derby at Valparaiso Sunday, and the winner, Solaria, his first G1 winner at two last year, is a filly. She won the 2400m turf race by seven lengths in 2:23.34 from Kasper, a gelding. The winner and runner-up were bred by Haras Paso Nevado, which stood the sire. Paso Nevado also is the breeder of the Scat Daddy colt Knockout, a high-priced Chilean auction yearling who’d defeated Solaria and the Scat Daddy colt Uncido in the important 2000m G1 Clasico Nacional Ricardo Lyon on turf at Club Hipico in Santiago last October for a 1-2-3 finish for sire and breeder. The trio subsequently ran 2-3-5 (Knockout-Solaria-Uncido) in the first leg of the Triple Crown, the 2400m G1 El Ensayo at Club Hipico on turf Nov. 1 in Santiago. The filly’s form has remained more consistent as Knockout was fifth and Uncido 11th in the El Derby. The Chilean Triple Crown consists of the El Derby at Valparaiso, the El Ensayo at Club Hipico, and the Clasico St. Leger at Hipodromo de Chile on Nov. 30. The latter race is on dirt at 2200m and did not include a Scat Daddy in the first three.
