VLT Revenue Pumping New Life into Ohio’s Racing Industry Paulick Report The Ohio racing and breeding industry has begun to show signs of recovery after years of decline with the influx of revenue from VLTs. According to an article at Ohio.com, in 2003, there were 2,591 Standardbred mares bred in the state. That number fell dramatically to 688 by 2010. In 2011, Gov. John Kasich signed a deal to allow VLTs at racetracks, and since then, the number of (Standardbred) mares bred has jumped to 2,200 last year. Ohio now ranks second in the nation, behind only Pennsylvania. “It’s put a hope in the business,” said Jay Mossbarger, co-owner of Midland Acres, a Standardbred farm in Bloomingburg. “Now everybody wants to come to Ohio. Canada is running to Ohio. Indiana is running to Ohio. Illinois is coming to Ohio. You’re going to have an influx of a lot of out-of-state money coming to Ohio.” More: www.ohio.com/news/local/ohio-s-horse-racing-industry-on-the-rebound-1.462080
