From Los Al Site Horses were back on the track training at 6 a.m. at Los Alamitos Race Course following the unveiling of the new mile oval on Tuesday morning. "The mile track is open for business," said track consultant Brad McKinzie. Trainers conditioned their horses on the newly expanded mile track until 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Training will resume early Wednesday morning. Thoroughbred trainers from across town are currently moving into the Los Alamitos barn area and their horses will likely starting training on the track as early as this weekend. "By next Tuesday, we'll see a lot of new horses on this track." McKinzie added. In addition to serving its current horse population, the Orange County oval will also operate as stabling and training facility for top tier Thoroughbreds in the Southern California circuit. Los Alamitos will also host five weeks of daytime Thoroughbred racing in addition to its existing nighttime Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing meet. Los Alamitos will conduct a two week Thoroughbred daytime meet starting on Thursday, July 3 through Sunday, July 13 and a three week Thoroughbred daytime meet on Thursday, December 4 through Sunday, December 21. -30-

I watched all the races last night, there didn't seem to be much difference for the quarter horse races. The one-turn 4-1/2 furlong races looked the same, but it seemed that closers were doing a little better than usual - there was only one wire to wire winner of the four races, using the original 5 furlong track as usual. But this was only one night. Thankfully all eight races went off without a hitch.
I'm wondering how it will work out in July when they're using the smaller track for the night quarter horse and 4-1/2 furlong thoroughbred races, and the larger one mile track during the day for the all-thoroughbred card. There are two cross-overs and the smaller track is banked, so there will be an "irregular" surface where the two courses cross. Will that cause issues? Remains to be seen.
I also noticed that the announcer used a new nickname for the place a couple of times during the card - didn't catch it (wasn't expecting it) - something like the track of sunsets and palm trees, or whatever (that's wrong) I guess it's a take off on the "Track of Lakes and Flowers", as Hollywood Park used to be called. I'll try to catch the exact nickname tonight.

Who is Mike Joyce, a TVG guy? Maybe that's why I never heard it before. Ed Burgart never said it (I've watched just about every race at Los Alamitos for the last 14 years, but not the recap shows) - Burgart just calls the races in a precise, business-like manner. Funny that the first time I heard an announcer use the term it was by that schlock Chris Kotulek.

That explains a lot - Kotulak is an old (fired) TVG guy too, isn't he?

I wanted to see the track - Who is this kid? He's as bad as Gino! TVG really is unwatchable. I'm so glad HRTV is on tonight for Sam Houston. We have to subscribe but it's worth it!

I wish there was an overhead of the track. I'd heard that the backstretch wasn't entirely straight, but with a slight bend toward the far turn. That picture sort of shows it, but not very clearly. And if that's true, the far turn (FAR, if you know where the grandstand is!) looks very tight.
