today they ran what used to be the Charles H STRUB stakes at santa anita. I say used to be because it is only a shell of what it once was thanks to corporate sponsorships of other races and other nonsense at santa anita. they have let this race fall through the cracks to where it is now no more meaningful then an overnight stakes race. it has gone from a grade 1 10 furlong 500k prestigious race, to a mile and a sixteenth grade 2 200k afterthought. hell they don't even run it after the 2nd leg of the series now, the san Fernando. it is sickening.
anyway here is a clip of one of the two best horse races I have ever seen. the 1987 strub between snow chief, Ferdinand, and broad brush. they don't show the whole race, only the last 1/2 mile or so, but it is great. what made it great was Ferdinand was the deep closer, but he hooked up with snow chief past the stands the first time, and except for a brief moment down the backside where the video picks up, they went neck and neck for amost the entire last mile of the race. broad brush joined them briefly on the turn, but they went at it to the wire and Ferdinand never could get by the little chief. I was there live in section h at the top of the rafters where the long tables and folding chairs were, the best seats in the house to watch a race, yelling and screaming to the wire. no tvs for me back then. it was all live outdoors. I knew chief had held on and was so happy. he was so game the way he stretched out at the wire to hang on by a nose. that was one of my fondest memories growing up. being there with my dad for that race.
