Ponche de Leona, dam of 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man, sold for $775,000 to Brushwood Stable to top Tuesday’s session of the 56th Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. The price is the highest amount paid during the first two days of the four-day sale.
On Tuesday, 276 horses grossed $16,794,200, for an average price of $60,849 and a median price of $35,000. During the second session of last year’s sale, 248 horses sold for $20,013,700, resulting in an average of $80,700 and a median of $40,000.
“I thought the session was very good,” Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell said. “The prices paid for horses were comparable to Monday’s session, especially at the top end. The median price was the same for both days. This indicates a consistent market through and through.”
Cumulatively, Keeneland has sold 508 horses for $30,509,100. The average is $60,057 and the median is $35,000. During the first two days of the 2013 sale, 449 horses sold for $35,345,100, an average of $78,720 and a median of $35,000.
On behalf of Elizabeth Moran’s Brushwood Stable, located near Malvern, Pa., Reiley McDonald purchased Ponche de Leona, a 15-year-old daughter of Ponche in foal to Distorted Humor.
“The mare gets great foals,” McDonald said. “She’s the dam of a Breeders’ Cup winner and there are not many like her in the sale. We stretched a little to get her but who knows what the foal’s worth.
