I think this is true for all states where racing receives slots revenue. MD has a governor that supports the racing and breeding industry - lucky them! Slots Revenues Offers ‘Shot in the Arm’ to Maryland Horse Racing Paulick Report The Maryland Horse Breeders Association credits casino revenues with a revitalization of the state’s horse industry, according to a story from CBS Baltimore. The organization says that the state’s breeding program has successfully offered incentives to horse owners and breeders to continue, and even expand, operations in Maryland. “It’s certainly a much-needed shot in the arm,” jockey Donnie Miller, Jr., said about the program. Since casino-style gaming took effect in 2010, seven percent of slot machine revenues go to horseman’s purses which will total more than $36 million for 2013 and have nearly doubled average daily purses at Maryland tracks to about $300,000. On top of that, the state’s breeding program nearly doubles purse awards for Maryland-bred racehorses who are among the top three finishers in a Maryland race. Advocates say this program has not only helped to boost the horse industry but has also made Maryland racing more competitive overall. According to online ads from the organization, slots revenues have supported 600,000 acres of farmland and 14,000 jobs and has accounted for $1.6 billion in the state of Maryland.
