ATM Heist Turns Training Upside Down at Palm Meadows
by Ray Paulick
Robbers crashed into the Palm Meadows training center after stealing a nearby ATM around 4am Tuesday
Trainers and employees at Palm Meadows in Boynton Beach, Fla., arrived at a crime scene on Tuesday morning after a landscaping truck carrying a stolen ATM machine rolled and crashed near the quarter-mile chute of the training track owned and operated by the Stronach Group. Suspects fled on foot and were the subject of an early morning police manhunt that included helicopters equipped with infrared cameras.
The perpetrators are still at large.
The heist occurred around 4 a.m. at a Chase bank near Woolbright and Jog Road, just south and east of Palm Meadows. The thieves were seen heading west on Boynton Beach Boulevard and then north on Lyons Road at high speed, turning into the second entrance to Palm Meadows. They then crashed through the closed gate on the right-hand side of a manned security checkpoint of the training center.
Trainer Mark Hennig said it appeared they drove toward the dormitories and clockers stand, then turned left at the mulch facility.
“They must have headed straight toward the quarter-pole chute, unaware that the road they were on had a dead-end approaching, and they flipped the truck about 20 yards from the rail,” said Hennig. “The ATM machine was just laying there, but it was still sealed up. No money had come out of it.”
By the time police arrived, Hennig said, stable employees were already beginning their daily work, and the infrared cameras would have sensed bodies moving throughout the area. Police sealed off the perimeter.
The manhunt by Palm Beach County Sheriffs also delayed training so police could examine the dirt track for footprints to see which direction the culprits may have taken.
The main track didn’t open for training until 7:30 a.m., 75 minutes later than usual, and turf training was also delayed.
Anyone with information on the suspects is urged to call Crimestoppers at 800-458-TIPS.
