Hialeah, considered by many as the most beautiful race track in North America, will open their limited quarterhorse season this coming Friday, November 29. The season runs through February 23, racing three or four days a week. They now have a full casino - slot machines, poker, electronic table games, and dominoes ( ?) They also now have a full schedule of simulcast racing. So, for the next month or so months south Florida will have THREE tracks competing for bettors - Calder, Gulfstream Park, and Hialeah, with Tampa Bay Downs (west coast) joining the fray on December 7. Truly a bizarre situation - even worse than the Delaware Park/Keystone/Garden State situation in the 1980s.

Hialeah is quarter horse racing for the time being. It is very bizarre. The dominoes are there for the Latinos and the old farts who have lived down there for 40 years

Mack, according to Florida law*, a race track has to run a certain number of live racing dates in order to conduct year-round simulcasting and operate a casino. That's why they run a very short, limited quarter horse meet.
A few years ago, the first year they had quarter horse racing, we were down there the week after. I called to ask why they didn't have simulcasting and they said they have to conduct at least one "successful" live race meet before they could implement simulcasting the next year.
*of course, to some race tracks, notably Gulfstream Park, "Florida law" means nothing.
