Illinois Horsemen, Tracks Agree on ADW Deal; Legislative Action Needed

“Illinois horsemen on Tuesday reached an agreement with Illinois race tracks and other racing stakeholders to extend the state’s advance deposit wagering law for three years beyond its scheduled expiration on Jan. 31, 2014. The agreement, which must be approved by Illinois lawmakers and signed into law to become effective, would provide for a full schedule of racing at the state’s five tracks in 2014, thereby avoiding the threatened doomsday scenario of draconian cuts to live racing opportunities.
“Should this plan become law and continue live racing unabated next year, it will prevent the catastrophic loss of thousands of jobs, at our tracks and throughout Illinois agribusiness, supported directly or indirectly by live racing. The plan will fully fund the Illinois Racing Board and will impose a temporary surcharge on winning wagers placed through ADW and at tracks, OTBs, and inter-track wagering facilities.
“We thank the IRB for its leadership in encouraging all parties to reach this agreement on Tuesday. We look forward to presenting this plan to Illinois lawmakers, should they return into session as expected in early December, and will press for its favorable consideration.”
