Casse has contenders for three biggest stakes on Jackpot card By Mary Rampellini DRF
Trainer Mark Casse will attack Saturday’s $2.2 million Delta Downs Jackpot card with starters in the three major races among the day’s eight stakes. Casse has Coastline for the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot; Appreciating and Tepin for the Grade 3, $500,000 Delta Downs Princess; and Uncaptured for the $150,000 Delta Mile.
The Jackpot card will have an afternoon first post of 1:15 Central. The fields for the races were to be drawn Tuesday. Delta plans to offer a $200,000-guaranteed pick four that will include the Princess and Jackpot.
Casse has been a longtime participant on what is annually the biggest card of the meet at the Vinton, La., track. He sent out Turf War to a dead-heat win in the Jackpot in 2007 and last year captured the Delta Mile with Prospective. Casse is hopeful the horses he is sending this year will adapt to the six-furlong oval.
“All four horses we’re bringing, we had that in mind,” Casse said. “We’ve been there enough now to know who likes it and who doesn’t like it, and we feel like these horses fit. Hopefully, we’re right.”
Coastline could be favored in the Jackpot, a 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds, after winning the $61,000 Street Sense at a mile at Churchill Downs. He dominated by three lengths and was flattered when fourth-place finisher Almost Famous came back and romped in a highly rated allowance at Churchill. Coastline, meanwhile, was tabbed for a trip to Delta for the Jackpot.
“I think he suits there very well,” Casse said. “He’s got some speed. I don’t think the distance is going to be a problem. I think he has a legitimate chance to win it, so there’s a million reasons to go.”
Coastline is to be ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, who also has the mount on Appreciating in the Princess, a one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies. Casse said Miguel Mena will ride Tepin and Uncaptured. The horses are to fly in Wednesday from Kentucky. They are scheduled to arrive in Houston, then van two hours to Delta Downs.
Coastline was one of 14 horses pre-entered in the Jackpot on Nov. 12. The field will be limited to 10. Others pre-entered include Best Plan Yet, Rise Up, Casiguapo, Rum Point, and Intense Holiday. Yes I’m Lucky, a three-time stakes winner also among the pre-entries, may not be entered in the Jackpot, trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. said Monday.
“I’m leaning against it right now,” he said. “But I’m not going to say no.”
Plesa said an alternative for Yes I’m Lucky is the $100,000 Pulpit at Gulfstream on Nov. 30.
Pre-entries for the Princess included graded stakes winners Miss Behaviour, Concave, and Bahnah.
The Jackpot is to be broadcast on both HRTV and TVG. The race will have a post time of 4:15 p.m. Central. It also will be featured live on Sirius XM Radio as part of a two-hour program hosted by Dave Johnson, Bill Finley, and Chris McCarron.

Coastline, Rise Up Set for Delta Jackpot By Frank Angst Bloodhorse
After rolling to victory in the Street Sense Stakes Oct. 27 at Churchill Downs, Coastline will make his graded stakes debut in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III) Nov. 23.
John Oxley's Coastline, who posted a three-length victory in the one-turn mile Street Sense, will stretch out to two turns for the first time in the 1 1/16-mile Delta Downs Jackpot, where the son of Speightstown will face nine other juveniles including Rise Up, the impressive winner of the local Jackpot prep race.
Trained by Mark Casse, Coastline finished second to Almost Famous in his Sept. 13 maiden special weight debut at Churchill before rolling to a 3 1/2-length victory in a seven-furlong maiden special race Oct. 5 on the Keeneland Polytrack. Returned to the dirt for the Street Sense, Coastline dueled with Almost Famous early through a half-mile in :47.14 before drawing off against five rivals while completing one mile in 1:36.77.
"His race at Keeneland was very good, and then in his last start with Almost Famous, they didn't kid around early. They went a pretty good first half-mile and he kept running, so I was proud of him," Casse said. "That was the day they ran all of the 2-year-old races at Churchill, a big preview day, and they ran like a second faster than anyone else that day."
Bred in Kentucky by DATTT Farm, Casse went to $190,000 to land Coastline for Oxley at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. Casse's opinion of the Street Sense victory only became stronger after Almost Famous rolled to a six-length score in a Nov. 9 allowance-optional claiming race at Churchill.
"Almost Famous is a good horse; he came back and won again," Casse said. "For us to press him and keep running, I thought it was a big race."
Casse won last year's Delta Mile Stakes, on the Jackpot card, with Prospective , and he'll be looking for his second Jackpot score after saddling Turf War to a dead-heat victory with Z Humor in 2007.
"I think it's a nice little racetrack," Casse said. "We enjoy going down there and they put a lot of money up."
Already comfortable at Delta Downs is Paul and Andrena Van Doren's Rise Up, who rolled to a 6 1/2-length victory in the one-mile Jean Lafitte Stakes Oct. 26 at the Vinton, La. Track. Trainer Tom Amoss decided to ship early to Delta after the Rockport Harbor colt dueled through six furlongs of the Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) in 1:11.63 before fading to sixth in the Sept. 7 1 1/16-mile race at Churchill.
"We came into that Churchill race thinking we had a horse that would relax and was ready to route, and we got just the opposite; an aggressive horse that faltered," Amoss said. "We worked on that a lot between the Churchill race and the Jean Lafitte, and that worked out well."
In the Jean Laffitte, Rise Up tracked from three or four lengths off the lead early before taking command in the far turn and drawing off in the stretch. The bay colt, who already has started at tracks in four different states, will break from the outside post in Saturday's field of 10.
"He handled the (Delta) configuration well," Amoss said. "The outside is a good spot for us because we know he has that in him—being too aggressive—so being outside and not too crowded is a good thing for our horse."
The Van Dorens privately purchased Rise Up after he impressed Amoss with a clear victory in the Mountaineer Juvenile Stakes. He was bred in Kentucky by Cottonwood Stables, which initially campaigned him with Blazing Meadows Farm.
Trainer Doug O'Neill, who captured last year's Delta Jackpot with Goldencents who would go on to win this year's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), is back with Reddam Racing's Rum Point. The Malibu Moon colt enters off an off-the-board finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
Also entered is All American Horses' Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Casiguapo, by Sightseeing .

Rise Up Impresses with Solid Jackpot Win By Claire Novak, @bh_CNovak Bloodhorse Photo: Coady Photography Rise Up and Gerard Melancon dominate the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes. Paul and Andrena Van Doren's Rise Up, who rolled to a 6 1/2-length victory for trainer Tom Amoss in the Oct. 26 Jean Lafitte Stakes at Delta Downs, continued to impress with a sparkling gate-to-wire triumph in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III) Nov. 23 The 2-year-old son of Rockport Harbor rolled through 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.71 while finishing six lengths ahead of his nearest competitor. He was ridden by Gerard Melancon, who with the victory became the only rider to have taken two editions in 12 runnings of the Jackpot (he won in 2011 with Sabercat). Rise Up found clear sailing from the outside post in a field of 10, breaking slightly to the right but setting off to an otherwise smooth beginning. That was not the case for 8-5 favorite Coastline, who stumbled badly and went to his knees from Post 2 before recovering and settling at the back of the bunch. Angled expertly over from the outside by Melancon to a rail spot entering the first turn, Rise Up settled nicely while clicking off a quarter in :22.82, a half in :46.36, and three-quarters in 1:11.94. The bay colt maintained about a length advantage until striking the far turn, when Casiguapo and Rankhasprivileges both attempted to reel him in. But Rise Up was already widening away, and drew off through a mile in 1:38.08 to win by daylight. He returned $6.20, $4, and 2.80 at 2-1, while a distanced Casiguapo paid $6 and $4 to place and Rankhasprivliges brought $4, 1 3/4 lengths further back in third. Roman Unbridled, Whyruawesome, Mighty Brown, Big Bazinga, Coastline, Flat Gone, and Rum Point completed the order of finish. Amoss shipped Rise Up to Delta Downs early after he was dusted soundly in the Sept. 7 Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, dueling through six furlongs of the 1 1/16-mile event before fading to sixth. In the Jean Lafitte, Rise Up tracked about four lengths off the lead before taking command heading into the far turn and drawing off in the stretch. The Van Dorens purchased Rise Up privately from Blazing Meadows Farm and Cottonwood Stables prior to the Iroquois, after he impressed Amoss with a clear victory in the Mountaineer Juvenile Stakes in August. He was bred in Kentucky by Cottonwood out of the Johannesburg mare Appenzell, and raced for trainer Tim Hamm through the first three starts of his career. Rise Up, a $27,000 RNA from the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale when consigned by Brookdale Sales, improved his record to four wins and a second from six starts, with earnings of $810,633. The Delta Jackpot victory afforded him 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
