Giacomo to Newly Formed Heritage in Maryland
Bloodhorse
Veterinarian Brooke Bowman and Louis Merryman announced Nov. 18 the formation of Heritage Stallions, a new Thoroughbred stallion facility to be operated on property that was formerly part of the original Windfields Farm near Chesapeake City, Md.
Both Bowman and Merryman share a rich history in Maryland breeding. Bowman, who worked for several years as an attending veterinarian at several breeding establishments, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman, who were ranked as the leading breeders in the state for several recent years.
Merryman, formerly general manager of Northview Stallion Station, hails from a family of several generations of prominent Maryland breeders, owners, and trainers.
"We chose the name Heritage Stallions to reflect not only our family heritages, but the historic heritage of Maryland Thoroughbred breeding," said Bowman and Merryman in a joint statement. "With the recently adopted significant enhancements for Maryland breeders and the lucrative racing opportunities available at Maryland racetracks, we believe Heritage Stallions is the beginning of a new legacy."
Heritage's initial roster of stallions includes dual grade III winner Hunters Bay, an Adena Springs homebred that has recently retired from racing. A son of Ghostzapper , he is out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Smoke Glacken mare Smok'n Frolic.
Other stallions formerly based at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs operations near Paris, Ky., or Aurora, Ontario, Canada, that will relocate to Heritage Stallions are Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Giacomo (Holy Bull—Set Them Free, by Stop the Music), graded stakes winner Plan (Storm Cat—Spain, by Thunder Gulch ), and dual grade I winner Showing Up (Strategic Mission—Miss Alethia, by T. V. Commercial).
R. Larry Johnson will relocate his stallion Street Magician , a grade III-winning son of Street Cry—Magical Meadow, by Meadowlake, to Heritage. Street Magician, whose first crop of 2-year-olds will race in 2014, formerly stood at Northview Stallion Station near Chesapeake City. Johnson is also retiring Despite the Odds, a graded III-winning son of Speightstown —Lady Aloma, by Cozzene, to stand his first season at Heritage.
"We couldn't be more excited that Mr. Stronach and Mr. Johnson have shown the confidence in us and share our enthusiasm for the opportunities that we can all realize," said Bowman and Merryman.
Heritage Stallions' complete 2014 roster is as follows (2013 fees in parentheses):
Despite the Odds $1,500 (new)
Giacomo $5,000 ($5,000)
Hunters Bay $6,000 (new)
Plan $4,000 ($4,000 Canadian funds)
Showing Up $3,000 ($2,500 Canadian funds)
Street Magician $3,000 ($3,000)
