Flutterby upsets Cut the Charm for 93-year-old owner-trainer By Mike Welsch DRF
MIAMI - Flutterby, trained by 93-year-old Jerry Bozzo, outlasted the 5-2 favorite Side Street to register a one-length victory in Saturday’s $50,000 Cut the Charm Stakes at Calder.
Bozzo, a World War II veteran, is the owner and breeder of Flutterby, a 2-year-old daughter of Congrats who raced with blinkers for the first time in the 5 1/2-furlong Cut the Charm. Flutterby stalked the early pace of Pomeroy Angle, opened a commanding advantage in early stretch, then withstood a final bid from the 5-2 Side Street.
Side Street was easily second best, then had to withstand a claim of foul by the rider of Red Brunette, who stumbled badly shortly after the break to lose her best chance.
Flutterby was ridden to victory by Luca Panici. She completed the distance in 1:05.67 and paid $38.60 for her second win in four starts.
Elusive Blueboy led from start to finish to prove a 2 3/4-length winner of the $50,000 Excellent Luck Stakes. The 2-year-old son of Bluegrass Cat easily held safe a final rally from Tapicero, who was making his first start in the Excellent Luck.
Elusive Bluboy is trained by Ralph Nicks for owner-breeder David Garner. He covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.70 under jockey Jose Alvarez and returned $2.60.
