Parx Racing Issues Quarantine Due to EHV-1 Case Paulick Report
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture today issued a strict quarantine order at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Bucks County, after a horse stabled at the track tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus, Type 1.
Some horses at the track came into contact with the positive horse and have shown clinical signs of the disease, ranging from fever to neurological impairment. The horses remain under quarantine until test results are completed.
There is no threat to human health from Equine Herpesvirus.
Barns housing the positive horse and horses showing signs of the virus are quarantined for at least 21 days. Horses must be free of clinical signs for 21 days and test negative for the disease before the quarantine can be lifted.
Under the quarantines, movement of horses on and off the track is restricted. Quarantined horses are not permitted to train and strict sanitary and biosecurity standards are enforced.
The highly contagious virus causes upper respiratory infection and severe neurological disease in horses.
Horse owners with concerns may call the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services at 717-772-2852.

Two horses stabled at Aqueduct possibly exposed to Equine Herpes BY Jerry Bossert NY Daily News
Two horses that were potentially exposed to an Equine Herpes Type 1 (EHV-1) positive horse at Parx Racing in Philadelphia, have been found at Aqueduct. EHV-1 is common viral infection which can cause respiratory disease, abortion in broodmares, death in newborn foals and in rare instances, a neurological form of herpes. It may be spread by close contact with an infected horse or by objects contaminated by an infected horse. Currently, the two horses have been examined by a veterinarian and are not showing signs of illness. The horses will be in isolation off-track with daily monitoring by the New York State Gaming Commission and New York Racing Association officials. The horses that were in the same barn at Aqueduct as these potentially exposed horses are also being closely monitored daily for signs of illness.
The Commission didn't reveal which barn the two horses were found at. An outbreak of EHV-1 started earlier this week at Parx and as of Nov. 13, horses stabled at Parx weren’t allowed to enter the grounds of NYRA tracks. There were several scratches on Wednesday’s program because of this. Also, any horse that leaves either Aqueduct or Belmont to race at Parx will not be allowed to return until further notice. Parx has quarantined two barns and have postponed two $75,000 stakes scheduled for Sunday. No horses stabled at Parx are permitted to leave and the quarantine will last for three weeks
