GS is definitely winning the war against Calder.
Sunshine Millions Preview Day offered at Gulfstream
The inaugural Sunshine Millions Preview Day, scheduled for Saturday at Gulfstream Park, features eight stakes for Florida-breds totaling $1 million. The program replaces the old Florida Millions program held in recent years at Calder.
A field of seven has been entered for the $150,000 Millions Classic Preview over 1 1/16 miles. Grade 1 veteran Jackson Bend, winless since taking the 2012 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct, is the marquee name in the lineup. Despite being in the midst of a lengthy losing skid, the six-year-old has been competitive at times this season, placing in the Forego, Smile Sprint Handicap and $115,000 Housebuster.
Souper Speedy, elevated to first in the downgraded Jaipur at Belmont in June, is another dropping in class. The Live Oak homebred was recently fourth in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont, a race that also included Jackson Bend.
Grade 3 winner Cash Rules, who makes his second start off an extended layoff, might be the one to beat. The six-year-old gelding won the Carl G. Rose Classic, Calder's equivalent of this race, last season, and later finished a clear second to Ron the Greek in Sunshine Millions Classic in January.
The three-year-old Sr. Quisqueyano, a three-time stakes winner this year, comes in off a wire-to-wire score in the $100,000 Quality Road over this course and distance.
Cash Rules was cross-entered in the $125,000 Millions Turf Preview over 1 1/16 miles on the grass. Bad Debt, who captured the Calder equivalent of this race, the Bonnie Heath Turf Cup, in 2011 and 2012, is the likely favorite.
The $125,000 Millions Distaff Preview, for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles, features My Pal Chrisy, who's captured the $113,000 Paseana and $115,000 Musical Romance since joining the Marty Wolfson barn over the summer. Multiple stakes winner Awesome Belle is the main threat in a small field of five.
Awesome Belle was also cross-entered in the $125,000 Filly and Mare Turf Preview at 1 1/16 miles. If she chooses this option, she would face the three-year-old Silsita, who captured the Bourbonette Oaks and $100,000 My Princess Jess at Saratoga earlier this year for Todd Pletcher. Local stakes veterans Millennia, Parranda, and Nicki Starshine are other leading contenders.
Field sizes are obviously larger for the two juvenile turf events, the $100,000 Juvenile Turf and $100,000 Juvenile Filly Turf, both at one mile. Here's Johnny, runner-up in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile before winning a Keeneland allowance, is the likely favorite in the Juvenile Turf, while the Juvenile Filly Turf features Saratoga maiden winner and Jessamine third Courtesan, and Calder turf allowance winner Super Fantasy.
Cross-entered in the Juvenile Filly Turf and the $125,000 Juvenile Filly Sprint at 6 1/2 furlongs are Secret Kitten, undefeated winner of the Cassidy and Catcharisingstar at Calder, and Brave Raj winner Holiday Drama. Other major contenders include Monmouth debut winner Puddifoot, Lindsay Frolic winner Flat Out Charming, and Yes Liz, runner-up in the Sorority at Monmouth.
The $125,000 Juvenile Sprint over 6 1/2 furlongs features Juvenile Turf cross-entry My Brown Eyed Guy, who captured the Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes this summer. However, the favorite might be Wildcat Red, two-for-two following maiden and allowance scores over the Gulfstream strip this fall.
Birdonthewire winner Pachanga Party and recent Calder allowance scorer Bolita Boyz are other contenders.
