WTG Ladies!! Does anyone know if this is a first for all of the US?
Ladies First (and Second, and Third): Three Female Jockeys Form Hawthrone Trifecta Paulick Report
Hawthorne Race Course’s last race on Sunday, October 20 featured a rare racing event. For the first time in the track’s history, and possibly the country’s history, aside from female jockey challenge races, the top three finishers were ridden by female jockeys.
In a sport largely dominated by men, Hawthorne has seen some great female riders grace the Stickney oval. Both Zoe Cadman and Inez Karlsson cut their teeth at Hawthorne and currently the Hawthorne jockey’s room has a large number of female jockeys for the Fall 2013 race meet. Six of the Stickney oval’s thirty regular jockeys this meet are women and they are holding their own in the number of mounts they get each day. Five of the six female jockeys are apprentice riders, with Rosemary Homeister, Jr. being the one journeyman in the group.
This rare trifecta paid $1,625.60 for those that played the female trifecta and capped off a phenomenal day for Heidi Rose. Her three wins on Sunday, Retour ($29.00, 2nd race), Silver Prince ($27.00, 5th race) and Scappare ($17.20, 9th race) more than doubled her previous career win total of two.
The other talented young women that hang their tack at Hawthorne are Stephanie Slinger, Aymara Rivero and Taylor B. Rice.
