Increased Security Success In Joint Effort at Ruidoso Downs
SureBet
RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM Security from an elite horseracing security team and stringent drug testing will continue after they proved to be highly successful at Ruidoso Downs over Labor Day weekend.
The two largest purses in American Quarter Horse racing history were paid over Labor Day weekend in the Grade 1, $2.8 million All American Derby and the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity. All American Derby winner Feature Hero earned $1,180,110 while All American Futurity winner Handsome Jack Flash winner banked $1.3 million.
The drug tests on horses competing in these record-setting races all came back negative for illegal drugs and the purses have been paid to horsemen.
The drug testing was done at the renowned Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at University of California at Davis, one of the world’s premier testing laboratories in horse racing.
These innovative tactics came from cooperation between Ruidoso Downs, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the New Mexico Racing Commission (NMRC) and the Organization of Racing Investigators.
“Everyone involved came together to show that we are all totally dedicated to racing’s integrity,” said Ruidoso Downs’ general manger Shaun Hubbard. “We are in this for the long haul to guarantee the racing fan the finest product and to protect the jockeys and horses. Racing integrity is the highest priority for every party.
“I, personally, want to thank our partners. We are firmly united and will continue to be united.”
The elite security team from the Organization of Racing Investigators was throughout the Ruidoso Downs stable area during Labor Day weekend. The team members were all seasoned law enforcement professionals with horse racing experience. They also serve as the special events security team during the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and the Kentucky Derby.
The security at Ruidoso Downs serves as a prototype for future major American Quarter Horse racing events.
“AQHA learned a lot from that weekend working with the enforcement team and the Organization of Racing Investigators,” said AQHA executive director of racing Trey Buck. “We will be proactive working with other tracks and jurisdictions to ensure the integrity of racing. We are totally dedicated to continue this on a national level for the fans, jockeys and horses.”
This policy and any enhancements will continue at Ruidoso Downs next year when the season starts on May 22 with two days of trials to the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity.
