I do not like hockey. I never have. I never bothered to learn the rules or finer points of it as a kid, and by the time I did as a teenager, it just wasn't interesting to me. it is the most fake of all the major sports. anyone doubting this need only watch the replay of last nights game between montreal and Toronto.
these two dudes who are both supposed to be the tough guys from their teams fought twice in the same night. now the whole fighting thing is still so stupid to me. make up your mind. is this wrestling, boxing, or hockey? by letting this happen and accepting it as part of the game, hockey only cheapens itself and makes it look unorganized and out of control to the public.
its bad enough when the emotions run so high between these players that they brawl, and then the refs and the league does nothing about it. but what makes it even worse is when the league embraces it and even goes out of their way to make it happen.
you cant tell me that these two fighting was a spur of the moment, rage induced confrontation that was uncontrollable. if it was, ORR would have not immediately jumped off of him and called for help. that is not how people react when they are involved in a confrontation with someone who they really are angry with or hate. this was clearly a preplanned confrontation that went bad, and one of the players got hurt accidently.
it really makes the sport and its fans look like idiots when they have to pull WWE style storyline moves like this to keep fans interested. after seeing that last night, I have never been happier NOT to ber a fan of a sport in my life.

Respectfully disagree. Soccer is the most fake.

Growing up on Long Island I saw the Islanders flourish, at first a woeful team that then grew into a dynasty. So Hockey has always been a sport I've followed. They are moving the team to Brooklyn at that point I'll stop being a fan.

1st off. watching soccer sucks dried up mule dick. Playing it is another story, kind of like golf, whatever you're into.
2ndly. Baseball is friggin boring too. Being a former Reds fan (Big Red Machine fan as a kid) I tried to watch some of the Pirates/Reds game the other night. I may have watched 5 pitches and flipped the channel.
Now, as far as hockey....Like Pres, being brought up on Long Island, watching the Islanders was magical. I wasn't a fan but watching some of those playoff games during their "dynasty" was incredible. Sooo many times they were down and came back in the final minutes. Really exciting stuff. It also brings back good memories for me hanging out in my brothers 12x12 room with 6-8 of his friends while the beer flowed and the weed smoking was non stop while watching Islander playoff games. Besides that, hockey sucks too.
NOW...If your not a fan of football you better lift up your dress and check to see if you have a dick and ball set.

Blood,
My first hockey game was back in 1959, went to a rare Saturday afternoon Rangers game at the previous MSG up in the west 50s (between 49th and 50th street, I believe) We paid $2.50 with a Junior High School discount for an end balcony seat. The opponent was the dreaded Toronto Maple Leafs (my Toronto cousins' team!)
The Rangers lost 3-0, we didn't even get to cheer a goal. Johnny Bower got the shutout and poor Gump Worsley made over 50 saves, about average for him back then whent the Rangers were horrible.
I was hooked, and have been watching it ever since, one of the most exciting games there is, although I have to admit these new sissy rules have really ruined the game.
Back then we had one game a week, on Saturday night, always on the road. I was forced to watch the game in the basement on a tiny television because none of my siblings like the game. Of course it was black and white. Win Elliot did the games solo (no color commentary) and did the intermission show too.
Ah, those were the days!

Nice to see you posting BStock. However, perhaps a little less graphic description would be good One does not need a "set" to be a football fan either LOL BTW I love watching the US Womens soccer team!

BS, another comment about your post, where you talked about the comebacks in the playoffs. I can't remember what I did last week, but this game I'll never forget - the fifth game between the Islanders and Penguins in 1982. I was in Houston on a business trip, and a couple of guys I was with wanted to go to a strip club. When we got there for some reason one of the televisions was showing the hockey game! I was dreaming - sitting in one of the hottest strip clubs in Houson AND watching an Isanders playoff game. Turns out that they fell behind in the third period, and were on the verge of losing and being eliminated, breaking their playoff series winning streak. I couldn't tear myself away from the television (my co-workers thought I was strange!), didn't really care what was happening on stage. Well, John Tonelli tied the score with a minute or so to go in the third period, then he scored the winning goal in overtime - the Islanders came back again and won another series. Then I went back to doing what I was in that club to do............back to normalcy.

Wiz, I take exception to your comments, I live in the "STATE of HOCKEY" ( MN)& for those like yourself that don't get it, lifes to dam short to try & explain. Few, if any sports allow its participants to "bring it" & few can rival the intensity w/in a game in the way hockey does, especially the play-offs. To know the sport, one knows there is a game w/in a game. Perhaps tiddly-winks or checkers or other sports where bending your wrist is a requirement are more up your alley . NAH only kidding, To many MN's its not a game, its away of life, see up here kids get dropped out of the womb w/ skates, its a sport that the state of MN has dominated w/ past or present NHL players & the only state to have 5 division 1 college programs. In fact the Gopher program was the purest in all of college sports until the current coach took over, where as the MN program would only grant scholarships if you where a MN kid. Year in year out the GOPHER mens & womens programs are ranked #1 nationally or dam close. Heck, the indoor arena in my town of 8,000 sports a venue that rivals the top Div 1 schools, be it only a bit smaller.Your comments are about as goofy as the movie "SLAP SHOT", it doesn't take a "Miracle" to figure that one out P.S. GEO, The "GUMPER" sure was a character. I remember the biscuit bouncing off his grill more than a few times when he played with the NORTH STARS. I recall when asked why he was one of the last few goals to still not ware a mask, the Gumper replied " Because my face is to ugly to protect"

boy you must have been bored as F* today, huh? what did you do, go back a year to find this?
all those things you point out are fine and dandy if they mean anything to you. but they don't to me. fortunately I don't plan to be visiting Minnesota any time soon.
all I see is a game that either cant or doesn't want to enforce its own rules, which makes it a joke. entertaining? yes, in the same way that wwe is entertaining. lots of action, violence, personal squabbles, etc. but also not the sport that it is meant to be. I hate watching the olympics, so I don't. but I can say this, Olympic hockey is 10x better than pro. because they cut out about 90% of that bs and actually play the game. and my interest in the sport has noting to do with the amount of stress being put on my elbow while watching or playing it. in fact the two sports I watch more then any other are probably football and mma. not exactly checkers or tiddly winks.

Kid, when wiz was younger he was a "gopher" too!
Seriously, hockey isn't a shadow of the game it was even as recently as 20 years ago. All the ridiculous equipment they're wearing today, the new rules they've instituted, the ridiculous "shoot out", an extra point awarded for any game that's tied after 60 minutes, etc. Essentially every 60 minute tie is worth a game and a half to the two teams involved. Look at the standings, there are 30 teams (THAT is ridiculous too, but...) but only five have less points than games. That means, with the awarding of 1-1/2 times the points they used to award, 25 teams are over .500!
Don Cherry said it best when they started allowing all the European players into the NHL and began changing the rules to suit their game style, saying to the effect that "they're turning the game over to a bunch of figure skaters".

Cherry wasn't far off. I recall when the MN North Stars relocated to Dallas because the owner Norm "THE PERV" Green was about to get slapped by a MPLS city Aldermans daughter for sexual harassment where she was employed as his secretary. Seems the PERV was caught shaking her shoulders to see her units bounce & settled out of court. Getting to my point, By the time a new team came around ( the Wild) Minny's roster was about as foreign to me as a reading a phone book up-side down, in that they were mostly names from other country's. yes sir the game has changed in an attempt to remain relevant. I must say its working w/ teams all over the place w/3 teams coming out of California. Go figure.
whiz I was just having some fun w/ ya Bud, Hockey is pretty Dam important up here in MN, then again we call living in 30-50 below normal
