A recent editorial from Xpressbet's Jeremy Plonk claims that the Derby points system should make little difference to fans or to trainers, since it's designed to keep out a limited number of entries whose records don't merit a spot the starting gate anyway. Plonk also applauds the oft-criticized move not to give the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner enough points to start based on that single performance. "But it’s much ado about not-a-damned thing. Relax, fans. And especially: relax, trainers," he writes. "Unless the culture completely does a 180-degree turn in Derbyland, anyone with a reasonable 3-year-old will be in the 20-horse donnybrook at the Downs on the first Saturday in May. That’s not hope talking, that’s history." www.paulickreport.com/news/thoroughbred-racing/plonk-derby-point-system-makes-no-difference/
