Ohio Horsemen Without Revenue Agreement 48 Hours Before Thistledown Season
With just 48 hours to go before Thistledown’s 122-day race meet, Ohio horsemen have yet to agree with track management on their percentage of subsidies from Thistledown’s slots, which will likely lead to a blackout of the track’s signal outside the state.
The signal will be carried by TwinSpires and XpressBet, but without an agreement in place, the Ohio Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association has refused to grant approval for the track to sell its signal elsewhere. Horsemen don’t expect the issue to be resolved by Friday’s opening card.
Ohio horsemen don’t appear to be worried, since a new law grants them at least nine percent of revenue from the track’s slot machines if there is no agreement with the track on a set portion. The first condition book still contains purses which are an average of 65 percent higher than last year in anticipation of coming subsidies, and there are an average of 9.9 horses entered in the eight races on the opening card.
