San Gregorio Racing Stables and Jose and Gustavo De La Torre’s One Dashing Eagle was named the 2012 AQHA World Champion on Wednesday evening at Heritage Place in Oklahoma. One Dashing Eagle was also named champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old colt, while his owners were named AQHA Champion Owners. After receiving the title of World Champion, One Dashing Eagle’s connections announced that One Dashing Eagle has been retired and will go to stud in 2013.
“Now that he’s been voted World Champion he’s done everything that we could have hoped,” said Jose De La Torre. “I think that’s it and he’s retired.”
One Dashing Eagle had one of the greatest seasons of all-time. He became the first horse to win three races of $1 million or more and also became the first to earn $2 million in a single year. His breeders, the Allred Brothers, were recognized as the champion breeders. The Allred Brothers bred the winners of four Grade 1 races in between One Dashing Eagle and Carters Cookie. Comprising the late brothers Jerry, Harvey and Dale Allred, they were inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2000.
Paul Jones led in every important statistical training category, including 17 stakes wins, and was named champion trainer for the 11th straight year. He saddled stakes winners at six different tracks in 2012. Jones saddled Rylees Boy, Kobe and Stel My Corona to major stakes wins at Los Alamitos.
The 7-year-old Rylees Boy was named champion aged horse and champion aged gelding thanks in large part to his win in the 2012 Champion of Champions. The now three-time AQHA champion Rylees Boy also became the oldest Champion of Champions winner ever. Still going strong at the age of 8, Rylees Boy is expected to compete in the trials to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship on Sunday, January 27.
Robert Williams’ Flame N Flash was named the champion 3-year-old filly thanks to her runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Champion of Champions and wins in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap and La Primera Del Ano Derby.
“This filly has brought a lot of happiness to my dad,” said Cindy Williams. “We were tickled to death with our second place finish in the Champion of Champions. I’ll take second any day against that top group of horses.”
Hez Our Secret, the runner-up in the Los Alamitos Super Derby, was named champion 3-year-old colt. He won the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trial at Los Alamitos and also competed in the Champion of Champions.
“He’s a better horse than the record shows,” said owner Johnny Trotter. “We had hard luck with him as a 2-year-old. He colicked on the morning of the Rainbow Futurity and it was devastating to scratch him out of the race, but I said then that he had bigger and better things ahead. He’ll run again in (2013) and he’s hooking the best in the world every single time.”
Hez Our Secret is also expected to make his season debut in the trials to the Winter Championship.
“He gives you everything he’s got every time,” said trainer Trey Wood. “You can’t be mad when a horse does that.”
Racing for the late Robert Gentry, Fredaville, who won the Merial California Distaff Challenge, was named the champion aged mare. She won the Grade 1 Merial Distaff Challenge at Prairie Meadows and also competed in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos. Other champions included PJ Chick In Black (champion 2-year-old filly), El Duero (champion 2-year-old gelding), Ochoa (champion 3-year-old and champion 3-year-old gelding), Prospect To The Top (champion aged stallion), All About Larry (distance champion), Dash Glory Ease (South American champion), SF Banko Aguerrido (Mexican champion), Zoomin After Six (Canadian Champion) and G.R. Carter (champion jockey).
