Departing, Power Broker and Holiday Mischief are among the top contenders for the $500,000 Super Derby (G2), a 1 1/8 mile race for 3-year-olds held at Louisiana Downs on Saturday, September 7.
Departing will be one of the favorites going into the Super Derby (G2) based on his performance in the West Virginia Derby (G2) at Mountaineer Park on August 3. The 3-year-old gelded son of War Front took a commanding lead into the stretch of the 1 1/8 mile race and won by 8 3/4 lengths. It was a bounce-back outing after a disappointing sixth in the Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico on May 18, Departing’s only venture into the Triple Crown races. He has won a previous graded stakes race: the Illinois Derby (G3) at Hawthorne Race Course on April 20. Trained by Al Stall, Jr., Departing turned in his first workout at Churchill Downs on August 26, going four furlongs in 47.60. He has earned $1,079,500 from seven career starts and is 5-0-1.
Power Broker, a son of Pulpit, began his 2013 campaign at Santa Anita Park in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), finishing a disappointing fifth. He regrouped in May, winning an allowance race at Churchill Downs by 2 1/2 lengths and then the Easy Goer Stakes at Belmont Park in June. Upon his return to graded stakes racing, Power Broker finished runner-up in the Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park on July 28, though 9 3/4 lengths behind the winner. Trained by Bob Baffert, Power Broker turned in his latest workout at Del Mar on August 29: five furlongs in 1:00.80. He has earned $578,800 from nine starts and is 3-2-1.
Holiday Mischief earned a fees-paid trip to the Super Derby (G2) off his victory in the Super Derby Prelude Stakes at Louisiana Downs on August 3. The son of Into Mischief collared the leader in the late stretch despite being six lengths back, earning his first trip to the winner’s circle since an allowance race at Sam Houston in February after losing four in a row. Trained by Joe Offolter, Holiday Mischief turned in a five-furlong breeze on August 31 in 1:02.25 at Remington Park. He has a record of 11-3-2-1 and earnings of $117,810.
Mylute (eighth in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) at Saratoga last out), Sunbeam (runner-up in the Super Derby Prelude) and Bashaar (fourth in the Jim Dandy) are also possible contenders for the Super Derby (G2).
