Calder's Juvenile Showcase highlighted by FSS races
Saturday's Juvenile Showcase at Calder will feature six stakes races exclusively for two-year-old, headlined by the second legs of the Florida Stallion Stakes Series (FSS)-- the $125,000 Affirmed division and $125,000 Susan's Girl division for fillies. Both races are scheduled for seven furlongs on the main track.
Eighteen juveniles ready for a bit more distance have been split between the one-mile $75,000 Seacliff and one-mile $75,000 Lindsay Frolic for fillies. Rounding out the stakes are the $75,000 Calder Turf Dash and $75,000 Catcharisingstar for fillies. Both races are slated for five furlongs on the turf course.
My Brown Eyed Guy hopes to add to his winning streak in the Affirmed division of the FSS series. The dark bay son of With Distinction wired the first leg of the series, the Dr. Fager division, by 3 1/4 lengths while going six furlongs on July 20. That was the Kathleen O'Connell pupil's second consecutive victory after earning his first career win by 1 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight race just 14 days earlier.
My Brown Eyed Guy, who just missed by a nose in his career debut, keeps regular rider Eduardo Nunez in the saddle for Saturday's contest.
Best Plan Yet finished second to My Brown Eyed Guy in the Dr. Fager before going on to break his maiden on August 3 at Calder by two lengths in a seven-furlong maiden special weight. Fellow Jacks or Better Farm homebred D N A Approved ran second from start-to-finish in that maiden and returns to renew the rivalry with his Stanley Gold stablemate. The colts, who are both by Hear No Evil, first faced each other while making their career debuts in the Frank Gomez Memorial Stakes, with Best Plan Yet running fourth and D N A Approved taking sixth.
The respective third- and fourth-place finishers in the Dr. Fager -- Copa Del Rey and Arangol -- are also entered in the Affirmed, while Purchango and Twin Distinction complete the field.

One race earlier, Scandalous Act looks to be the post-time favorite for the Susan's Girl division of the FSS series. The Act of Duty filly dominated the first leg of the series, the Desert Vixen division, by 7 1/2 lengths on July 20, and proved untouchable in her career debut as well, cruising to victory by 6 1/2 lengths. Sandwiched between those two, though, was a subpar seventh in the J J'sdream.
Trainer O'Connell added blinkers to Scandalous Act's equipment for the first time in the Susan's Girl, and the filly will get Nunez back in the irons Saturday.
The second-, third-, fourth- and seventh-place finishers in the Desert Vixen are all returning for the Susan's Girl. Holiday Magic ran second to Scandalous Act ahead of Quinnkat, Fantastic Voyage and Proverbs Thirtyone.
The final two runners expected in the Susan's Girl gate are easy last-out maiden scorers Boheme de Lavi and Utootweet.
While the FSS series races will take center stage on the Saturday program, juveniles earlier on Calder's card will get their turn in the spotlight. The stakes action gets underway in the Seacliff, which features Brothersofthetime. The Bob and John colt ran second in the Frank Gomez Memorial after dominating by 5 1/4 lengths in his career debut at Calder on May 17. The dark bay most recently captured a six-furlong allowance at Gulfstream on July 20 by 1 1/4-lengths.
Best Plan Yet and D N A Approved are cross-entered in the Seacliff Stakes as well.
Fillies making their stakes debuts are abundant in the Lindsay Frolic Stakes next up, with Look of a Star the only runner in the field who has faced winners. The Exclusive Quality miss finished a close third as the post-time favorite in an August 9 allowance at Calder.
A full field of 12 was entered for the Calder Turf Dash Stakes, including the unbeaten Macho Trini. The David Fawkes-trained son of Macho Uno broke his maiden by a length on June 22 and just 14 days ago captured an allowance at Gulfstream Park by three lengths.
Ten fillies, each one making her stakes debut, will line up in the Catcharisingstar. City in Sky, Ya Esta and Tomei are the only runners in the race with allowance experience, which came jointly on August 9. City in Sky led throughout in that Calder contest to score by 3 1/4 lengths in front of Ya Esta in second while Tomei ran a one-paced fifth.
