35 To Race In John Deere California Trials On Saturday
CYPRESS, CA – August 9, 2013 – Thirty five freshman sprinters will be in action in Saturday’s trials to the John Deere California Juvenile Challenge at Los Alamitos. The trials will be headed by Kindergarten Futurity finalist Shaded Secrets, Beehive Futurity winner Jr Czech Swing, Arizona Spring Futurity winner Phone Tag, John Deere Northwest Juvenile Challenge runner-up Time For Jesse Lee, Kindergarten Futurity trial winner Maybach and Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile third place finisher Tres Magicals. The trials will be contested at 350 yards and the horses with the 10 fastest times will compete in the California regional final on Saturday, August 24.
The sixth race is the start of the John Deere California trials and will feature Jeffrey and Kim Pitcher’s Shaded Secrets, who was second to Kindergarten winner Glitter In My Face in the trials to that race, and Martha Wells’ Spring Futurity winner Phone Tag. Shaded Secrets, a filly by No Secrets Here, struggled in her two races after the Kindergarten final, but she has drawn nicely for this race and she could be tough to beat if she repeats her Kindergarten trial performance. She’ll be taking on a field that includes John and Cina Sperry and Paul Jones’ Maybach, a colt which edged Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist Well And Good when the two met in the Kindergarten trials. Maybach will also be looking for redemption after running out of the money in the Ed Burke Million Futurity trials. Parsons Ranch’s No Mas Secretos has been second when racing in trials to the Ed Burke and Governor’s Cup futurities. A similar effort should give the Chris O’Dell trainee a great chance to qualify.
Benny Rosset’s Jagger BR broke his maiden in a his last outing and based on that effort he’s one of the runners to beat in the second trial. The field will also include Antonio Fernandez-Chedragui’s Six Times Royal, who finished second in an Ed Burke Million trial, and invader All Guns Firing, who won a consolation stakes at Laurel Brown in his last start.
Jay Bingham and Robert Hosier’s Jr Czech Swing will be in action in the third heat. The Nevada-bred Swingin Jess filly won the $52,000 Beehive and also finished second in the $39,000 Ed Giles Futurity. A winner of nearly $25,000 in her career, Jr Czech Swing will be saddled by Ryan Hanson. Stan Young’s Hes Chillin ran fourth in the John Deere Northwest Juvenile and will now look to qualify to another regional finale. Porfirio Carrasco’s Tres Magicals ran third in his Ed Burke Million trial before finishing third to the highly regarded Mistic Rose in the Ed Burke consolation event. The fourth trial is loaded with the likes of Jim Walker’s Time For Jesse Lee, who has won four of six starts, and the unbeaten Make A Wish For Me. Racing for Paul Jones and Chad Richard, Make A Wish For Me is named after Emmanuel Curiel, the young man that visited Los Alamitos Race Course a couple of years ago thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation. Curiel passed away a few months after his visit, but he made such a positive impression on Jones that the AQHA champion trainer named this gray gelding in Curiel’s memory.
Sure Bet
