This was a very nice filly. Had to be really heartbreaking as she was a homebred and one of the last from Niijon. Nipissing suffers fatal injury in Wonder Where Nipissing, a resplendent winner of the Woodbine Oaks on June 9, was humanely euthanized after suffering an injury to her left-hind leg during the running of Sunday's Wonder Where Stakes at Woodbine. The bay filly stalked the early pace near the back of the Wonder Where field while saving ground along the rail under regular rider Steve Bahen. She was pulled up early around the far turn with the fatal injury and vanned off. A daughter of the late 2004 Queen's Plate champ Niigon, Nipissing was piloted perfectly by Bahen in the Woodbine Oaks, settling into a stalking position with the long-striding bay before pouncing to victory in the 1 1/8-mile Canadian filly classic. Trained by Rachel Halden, the Chiefswood Stable homebred went undefeated as a juvenile in four starts, including scores in the Princess Elizabeth and South Ocean Stakes. Nipissing would finish sixth in the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in her sophomore debut, and then returned to Woodbine where she finished second in the Selene Stakes in preparation for her Oaks score. Following the Oaks, Nipissing took on the colts in the Queen's Plate, eventually winding up eighth on the wire. Her eight-race career came to a close with a record of five wins and one second-place finish with purse earnings in excess of $638,498 Brisnet Nipissing received a congratulatory pat from Bahen after winning the Woodbine Oaks (WEG/Michael Burns Photography
