Wasn't he based in PA? Mello Sets Prairie Meadows Win Record by Dan Johnson Bloodhorse Jockey David Mello broke the record for number of victories during a Thoroughbred meet at Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino when he won two stakes on Iowa Classic Night Aug. 3. Mello won the $86,950 Iowa Sorority aboard Haforuhaforme and the $94,200 Iowa Breeders' Derby aboard Wolf Pack Jack to give him 98 wins for the meet, one more than the record Terry Thompson set in 2011. He added a victory Aug. 4 to give him 99 for the meet, which ends Aug. 10. From Foster, R.I., Mello started grooming horses at the track during the summer when he was 13, then became a jockey in 2003 when he was 19. He has won with 24% of his mounts at Prairie Meadows this year and has taken six stakes. Photo: Dan JohnsonJockey David Mello
