This is, of course, horrible news. Racehorses die in fire near La. Downs BOSSIER CITY- As many as two-dozen racehorses died in a barn fire near north Louisiana's Louisiana Downs racetrack Thursday night. Firefighters said a barn at Wraparound Farms burned to the ground with horses inside. KTBS TV, the ABC affiliate for the area, reported that when emergency crews arrived the barn was engulfed in flames. Crews are still working the scene and have not released a cause. The fire is under investigation. Local trainer Dan White reported that 26 horses died in the fire. One adjacent barn, which stables horses trained by Cecil Borel, caught fire but the blaze was quickly extinguished, he said. There was no official word on injuries or horse deaths from the blaze, which apparently started just before 6 p.m. CDT. A witness said one horse was saved from the fully engulfed barn, according to television station KSLA. The privately owned training facility, known as Wraparound, is across a creek from the racetrack. Travis Stone, track announcer at Louisiana Downs, said the facility is close to the racetrack backstretch, although the track was not threatened by the blaze. Heavy black smoke was visible to track patrons, he said. Fire crews were on the scene, the television station reported.
