This is a great idea for this great New York Horse! Saratoga to Celebrate Funny Cide Photo: Alex Cutadean New York-bred Funny Cide, who won the 2003 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I), will celebrate the 10th anniversary of those classic victories Aug. 4 at Saratoga Race Course. The Equine Retirement Day Salute to Funny Cide will begin with an 11:30 a.m. meet-and-greet in the paddock with trainer Barclay Tagg and his assistant Robin Smullen, as well as Jack Knowlton of owner Sackatgoa Stable. Back in 2003 I drove down for the Haskell at Monmouth Park (a bit of trivia - that was the first year that Springsteen's "Born to Run" was the theme song of the race!). I was walking toward the Clubhouse entrance when the owners of Funny Cide showed up in their yellow school bus. They marched off the bus, through the gate and then through the Clubhouse to the elevator, presumably to their tables in the "Jockey Club" ( ) The fans cheered them throughout the entire parade, and chanted "Funny Cide, Funny Cide". Unfortunately he finished third to Peace Rules later in the afternoon.

Funny Cide enjoys meeting his fans at Saratoga Funny Cide: The People’s Horse Returns to NY Paulick Report Few Kentucky Derby winners have generated as much widespread interest as Funny Cide did in 2003. His bid for the Triple Crown energized people across the country – especially in New York. He was the first New York-bred to the win the Derby, and his humble beginnings (he was sold for $22,000 as a yearling) and the middle-class nature of his owners appealed to many. They famously drove to the Triple Crown races in school buses. Funny Cide now has a permanent home at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky., but he returned to New York this week to visit his “old friends,” and to help raise donations for the care of other Thoroughbreds at the Old Friends retirement farm near Saratoga Springs. Paulick Report Editor-in-Chief Scott Jagow gives us a glimpse of the return of the “people’s horse.”
