Corona Chick, an outstanding race and broodmare, died Jun 26 from natural causes. Sporting a 18-15-2-0 race record, she earned over $590,000 on the track as a multiple stakes winner at Los Alamitos Racetrack. She was a small mare, probably weighing less than 1,000 pounds, but no one can forget how that little mare could run down the track. She was named champion 2yo, champion 2yo filly, and champion 3 yo 1991-92. Her breeder was Robert Etchandy (Strawberry Bob) of Corona, CA. Corona Chick was a daughter of Chicks Beduino out of Sizzling Lil. Her half-sister, Corona Kool, earned more than $1 million in race earnings.
Corona Chick was the dam of Corona Cartel, Corona Cash, Corona Caliente, and Valient Hero among others. Juliana Hawn Holt was her last owner, and Corona Chick is buried on her ranch. A Dash of Sweet Heat is Corona Chick's 3yo Mr Jess Perry filly currently in training at Ruidoso. Juliana Hawn Holt sold her for $650,000 as a yearling, then re-purchased her last fall for $1 million, presumably as a replacement broodmare prospect for her mother, Corona Chick. Corona Chick's last foal is a 2yo by Walk Thru Fire.
It's rare that an outstanding race mare becomes an outstanding broodmare, but Corona Chick did it. She is among a trio of small-statured Chicks Beduino offspring that were outstanding runners and became sires/producers. The other two are the sires Runaway Winner and Separatist.
RIP Corona Chick.

god I remember her so well. that was whwn I first started taking the quarters seriously. getting to the track around 1 or 2 p.m. and going up to the old replay center on the second floor of the grandstand to watch tapes all day for that nights races.i used to drive poor B.J. crazy to the point that final he just started making me my own copies for free for me to take home and watch there. I was just 20 years old when she was a 2 yr. old. and she busted me on many a night. I kept tying to beat her. she was such a quick breaker and would have a length on the field after 20 feet. I kept thinking, "ome of these days Holland ease is gonna break even with her and blow by her late". never happened. then I bet senor draconic and I think bills ryon against her also. she won like 13 in a row I think, and when she did finally lose it was at Hollywood park I think, to a 99-1 shot trained by laura pinnelli I believe. don't remember the name, but I know I didn't have her. I don't think I ever cashed a ticket on her,but she was a great fill. I always thought she was a little over rated though. not the best in my mind as others said, but still great.i always thought four forty blast was better then she was when he was at his best.

Maybe you thought she was over-rated as a runner, but as a broodmare and producer she was not over-rated, not by a long shot. Personally, I never thought she was over-rated as a runner - how could she be when she won 15 of her 18 starts! She won 13 races in a row (all of them stakes trials and final gates with one allowance race as a prep), won 5 stakes races, and lost her last stakes race (at 400 yds) by a head at Hollywood Park.
Her first foal, Corona Cartel, put her on the map forever. If Valiant Hero does as well as Corona Cartel as a sire, I think she will rank with Pocahontas TB as a mare that created dynasties. It's a shame that she doesn't have a daughter so far that has matched Corona Chick's broodmare abilities. She still has Mr Jess Perry and Walk Thru Fire fillies that may be producers. Maybe we'll skip a generation and see a granddaughter duplicate her grandmother's success.

I had to look up this horse! wiz - You have a great memory. She lost to Royal Trips in the Quarterhorse Derby at Hollywood. The chart says the trainer was Laura Lukas. Yes - one of D Waynes' wives ( I didn't know he had several LOL) Her maiden name was Pinnelli. Royal Trips paid $248 to Win!
Quarterhorse racing has lost a wonderful mare. I hope she does have a successful granddaughter.

i dint mean that in any way MM. she was a great brrodmare also. and when i say over rated, you have to understand where im coming from. im coming from a gamblers point of view. odds wise, she was 1-2 or lower in probably 80% of those races. if there is any doubt in my mind at all at those odds, im betting against her. by over rated im just saying overbet. yes RG, as i have said before, your man lukas is a pimp!! lolol! i remember the night well. i was at los al. in the cypress room betting via simulcast when she finally got beat and i was sick about it. i was going to play all in the p3 in that race and instead i went like 6 deep and left out only a couole horses, and one of them was royal trips. i wasn't happy.

I see what you mean from a gambler's point of view.
We need a few more race horses like Corona Chick to get the public interested in racing again.

yeah they had a great chance with one dashing easgle this last year, but as usualm the horse was gone and retired before he could attract anyone. the couple times I saw him he was awesome. just as dominant and more powerful of a finisher then anyone I have seen out there since four forty when he got good as a 2yr. old/ 3 yr. old.

I agree - One Dashing Eagle should have raced this year to try to become the top money earner in quarter racing. He probably could have done it. BUT he may have come up with an injury, so the de la Torre's decided to retire him at the top of his game.
This horse was a coup for One Famous Eagle - his other runners were relatively pitiful. Once again, says great things for the Allred breeding program.
This may sound petty, but I wish One Dashing Eagle would have had different owners.....de la Torre's are known to use illegal drugs in their horses. They have had a couple of training suspensions by CHRB. But they bought the horse as a yearling from Allreds, so they had a good eye for a racing prospect.

truthfully, I gave up a long time ago worrying about that at los al. and in the qh game altogether. my look on it is...........if they are successful, they are probably doping. the guys that aren't win at about a 3-8% clip. its just a fact. elmer, ekins, givens,.....basically most of the white guys, fall into that category. there are exceptions of course.
