Filly headlines Lexington Stakes Wed 17th, April 2013 Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Eleven 3-year-olds, including one filly, have been entered in Saturday's $200,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in a final attempt to gain entry into next month's Kentucky Derby. Won last year by 70-1 longshot All Squared Away, the 1 1/16-mile Lexington is the next to last chance to add points in the Kentucky Derby points system. The winner receives 20 points followed by 8, 4 and 2 for the next three finishers. The same amount of points will be available in next week's Derby Trial. Topping the field is trainer Ken McPeek's filly Pure Fun. Owned by Magdalena Racing, the filly will start from the far outside post with Rosie Napravnik riding. Last week, McPeek sent out Java's War to win the Blue Grass Stakes. Pure Fun can earn points from the Lexington for a spot in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 3. She currently has 20 points. The filly is coming off a third in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park on March 23 when she was the 4-5 favorite. "It looked like she was fighting the track a little the last quarter of a mile," McPeek said after the race. "It's her first start of the year and we thought she had a chance to get beat today. But she's a good filly and it's a step in the right direction." Of her three wins in nine starts, Pure Fun's lone stakes victory came in last December's Hollywood Starlet. The filly has banked $352,899. Shipping in from Maryland will be Where's Dominic, trained by Michael Trombetta for R.D.M. Racing Stable. The colt will break from post 5 with Edgar Prado in the saddle. Where's Dominic finished on the board in two stakes this year at Laurel Park. On Feb 9, he was second to Dynamic Strike in the Miracle Wood Stakes and fourth behind Mr Palmer in the track's Private Terms Stakes on March 9. Where's Dominic has earned $69.860 with two wins in five starts. Here is the full field in post position order for the Lexington: Winning Cause, Julien Leparoux; Pick of the Litter, Jesus Castanon; River Rocks, James Graham; Hip Four Sixtynine, Gabriel Saez; Where's Dominic, Edgar Prado; Sunbean, Gary Stevens; Examen, Garrett Gomez; Cerro, Joel Rosario; Wings of Fortune, Calvin Borel; General Election, Joe Rocco Jr. and Pure Fun, Rosie Napravnik. Post-time for the 32nd Lexington Stakes will be approximately 5:15 p.m. (ET). Charismatic followed his 1999 Lexington victory with wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. www.oddsandnews.com/horseracing/thoroughbred/news/2013-04-17/filly-headlines-lexington-stakes-184207

I don't really understand this:
"Pure Fun can earn points from the Lexington for a spot in the Kentucky Oaks"
If a filly had received points in ANY Derby prep, would they have counted for the Oaks?

A field of 11, 3yo’s was drawn today for Saturday’s $200,000, GIII Coolmore Lexington Stakes, going 1 1/16 mile over the Keeneland poly surface, where 20 Derby Points will go to the winner in this first of 2 Wild Card races in this season’s Kentucky Derby Championship Series. 20 Derby points might be enough for a derby gate this year but probably only as a A/E which the rules do allow for this year! So, below are 11, 3yo’s with virtually no derby points between them, looking for derby points in this “Last Call” for 2013 Kentucky Derby points here at Keeneland this Saturday! She might beat this field but I don't see her beatiing Julia McPeek predicts victory for Pure Fun By Marty McGee LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Coolmore Lexington Stakes is known as a final stop on the road to Churchill Downs, although that’s meant in the context of the Kentucky Derby. The maxim might well hold true again Saturday, when the Grade 3, $200,000 Lexington is run at Keeneland, but in this case, the 1 1/16-mile Polytrack race could prove a stepping-stone to the Kentucky Oaks and not the Derby. Pure Fun, the only filly among 11 3-year-olds in the field, is using the Lexington as her final prep for the May 3 Oaks at Churchill. If she wins – and she is the morning-line favorite to do so, albeit at a lukewarm 7-2 – Pure Fun will dash whatever Derby hopes exist among the connections of the Lexington’s male runners. “I do think we’ll win,” said Ken McPeek, trainer of Pure Fun. “She really needed her last race,” a third-place finish as the odds-on favorite four weeks ago in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park. “And she really needs this race if we want to be a threat in the Kentucky Oaks. I know this is a bit unconventional, but she’s doing great, and we’re really looking forward to trying this.” www.drf.com/news/lexington-stakes-mcpeek-predicts-victory-pure-fun

Despite a lot of criticism, Pletcher is getting it done.
Winning Cause enters Kentucky Derby picture By Marty McGee
LEXINGTON, Ky. – It’s always a case of the rich getting richer when Todd Pletcher sends out a winner, but the results of the Coolmore Lexington Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland provided an interesting twist to that familiar scenario.
Pletcher already had five horses ready to run in the 139th Kentucky Derby when another of his 3-year-olds, Winning Cause, jumped up and won the Grade 3, $200,000 Lexington with a good inside trip under Julien Leparoux. The colt earned 20 points toward eligibility for the Derby lineup and would seem to be in, if so desired – although Pletcher wasn’t about to immediately commit the colt to the May 4 race at Churchill Downs.
Just seconds after Winning Cause crossed under the wire a one-length winner over longshot General Election in the 1 1/16-mile Polytrack race, Pletcher was asked whether Winning Cause could be his sixth stable representative in the Derby.
“I’ve never thought he was good enough,” he said, smiling and shrugging his shoulders. “We’ll have to see.”
Winning Cause, by Giant’s Causeway, returned $15.60 as the fifth choice after finishing in 1:43.93. For Pletcher, it was his fifth winner in the Lexington from the last nine runnings.
After breaking from post 1 and saving ground in a field of 10 3-year-olds, Winning Cause took over from Cerro after turning for home in the 32nd Lexington and had enough to hold 34-1 General Election safe. Pick of the Litter was third, another neck back, with Cerro yet another neck back in fourth.
Sunbean, the 5-2 favorite, was fifth, while Pure Fun, the 7-2 second choice and the only filly in the field, ran seventh.
Pletcher said earlier in the week that he had not discussed the Derby for Winning Cause with the colt’s owner, Gil Moultray of Alto Racing LLC. After the Lexington, he said the topic would be addressed, although he did not seem to lean one way or the other on whether the colt would join Verrazano, Revolutionary, Overanalyze, Palace Malice, and Charming Kitten in his Derby army.
Only one more points race toward the Derby remains: the Derby Trial next Saturday on opening night of the Churchill spring meet. The Trial winner gets 20 points toward Derby eligibility.
The $2 exacta (1-10) paid $393.40, the $1 trifecta (1-10-2) returned $2,222.90, and the 10-cent superfecta (1-10-2-8) was worth a whopping $1,893.18.
Attendance on a cool, mostly sunny spring afternoon at Keeneland was 32,325.

oh boy - if pletcher has a record 6 entered and loses, the pletcher bashers will have a field day - and i have to ask - what's with the braid below? lol Pletcher will wait and see whether to run Lexington winner Winning Cause By Marty McGee LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday morning at Churchill Downs that no decision will be made until as late as next weekend as to whether Winning Cause will run in the 139th Kentucky Derby. Winning Cause became eligible for the May 4 Derby by earning 20 points with his 6-1 victory Saturday under Julien Leparoux in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. Owned by the Alto Racing LLC of New Mexico banker Gil Moutray, Winning Cause could become the sixth starter in the Derby for Pletcher, joining Verrazano, Revolutionary, Overanalyze, Palace Malice, and Charming Kitten. The record for most starters for a trainer in one Derby is five. Pletcher expressed mild surprise in the immediate aftermath of the Lexington that Winning Cause had reached this point. A son of Giant’s Causeway, Winning Cause is now 3 for 3 over the Polytrack surface at Keeneland and winless in four races elsewhere. Pletcher said the primary reason for running in the Lexington was “he was 2-for-2 at Keeneland going into this. We know he likes the surface and thought it was worth taking a shot.” Pletcher now has won the Lexington a record five times, all of them coming since 2005. Of his four prior Lexington winners, two have run back as longshots in the Derby: Coin Silver (12th at 38-1 in 2005) and Advice (13th at 49-1 in 2009). Winning Cause won the 1 1/16-mile Lexington by a length over General Election, a 34-1 shot who earned 8 points toward Derby eligibility. Kellyn Gorder, who trains General Election for WinStar Farm, said the May 18 Preakness is a possibility for the colt. Pick of the Litter was third. The disappointment in the race was the only filly in the field, Pure Fun, who was never a factor when seventh. Trainer Ken McPeek said he believed the filly needed the race and still is likely to run back in the May 3 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill. Meanwhile, Leparoux, who won the Blue Grass Stakes the previous Saturday with Java’s War, became the first jockey in 10 years to win both premier 3-year-old races at the same Keeneland spring meet. Edgar Prado, in 2003, was the last to pull such a sweep with Peace Rules in the Blue Grass and Scrimshaw in the Lexington. Dating to the 2010 fall meet, Leparoux has been the leading jockey at Keeneland for five straight meets, but he appears destined to be a distant second to Joel Rosario, who rode four more winners on the 10-race Saturday card. The good news for Leparoux, however, is that he is by far the top jockey in mount earnings this spring. Through 12 of 16 programs, his earnings total stood at $1,356,231. Record-breaking win for Ramseys Record-breaking win for Ramseys Ken and Sarah Ramsey broke the record they previously shared for most winners at a Keeneland meet when Scealeile won the first race Saturday, giving them their 13th win this spring. The Ramseys then won two more races, giving them 15 into Sunday action; they will continue to extend their new record with every subsequent winner through the end of the meet on Friday. The Ramseys previously shared the record of 12 wins at a meet with Calumet Farm, which established the mark in spring 1941, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Roberts, set in fall 1968. Meanwhile, Rosario entered Sunday action with 26 winners and stands an excellent chance to surpass the spring-meet record of 32 wins by Randy Romero, set in 1990. The all-time Keeneland record for wins at a meet is 45, set by Pat Day in the fall of 1991. Likewise, Mike Maker, with 15 wins into Sunday, looms a threat to break the all-time record for wins at a Keeneland meet set by his former boss, D. Wayne Lukas, who won 22 races at the 1989 fall meet. The spring-meet record of 16 was set in 2005 by Pletcher. www.drf.com/news/kentucky-derby-pletcher-will-wait-and-see-whether-run-lexington-winner-winning-cause
