This Board created because we have a new member who knows this track. Am glad to see he's already posting! Canterbury Kid asked me to post this yesterday. there are times cooler heads prevail. Now, if that would only happen on racing forums................LOL
Canterbury several years ago was having a tough time making a go of it, like a lot of tracks & closure seemed imminent. The track tried for years to try & get a Racino @ the track, However, the 1837 treaty gave the Indians reservations & as it played out exclusive gaming rights to operate Casino's. In MN the casinos lobbyists fought long & hard to keep the gaming a monopoly of which could only be over turned by our MN. state legislature. Hence Canterbury Parks applications where continually denied. However w/ the Vikings building a new stadium & the public having to flip the fair share of the tab Canterbury reapplied for a Racino App. & offered to contribute 150 mill per yr to finance the stadium again however it was narrowly over turned. Based on the likely hood of an approval of the next app by the Park The Minnawhaakaton Souix who owns the only casino in the Mpls/ St.Paul metro & is located about 4 miles mile from the Park offered in lue of not appling for another app that the casino would contribute 100 million over a 10 yr period to add to the track purse structure, which the track gladly accepted. Since the agreement 1 1/2 yrs ago state bred foaling is up by over 70%
( track emphasizing increased purse money for state breds) Stall applications are up 33% past capacity w/ attendance @ an all time high. Canterbury has a card club & was allowed to increase the # of tables & for the 1st time our state has OTBs. In the marketing business plan co-sponsored by the casino, Canterbury Park has been projected to be a top 20 race track in the USA. State legislature, the track, Casino, back side track employees ,owners, trainers & breeders were allowed to sit in & put their 2 cents in to help for a common cause which is to make MN racing the best it can be- Heck of a story wouldn't you say, All is going so well that their has been preliminary talks already about extending the agreement -everyone wins P.s. Now that a solid foundation has been set its only a matter of time until the Park will be going after National exposure- Its a matter of not if, but when we will see a MN bred in the Derby Jon. Please by all means paste at PaddockPros if you would like, I would but I'm computer challenged & be sure to say a big Hello to my friend Challedon I'm sure he'll remember me. Looking forward to stopping by & talking some racing w/everyone - THE KID
