2013 Preakness champ Oxbow, and this year’s Kentucky Derby victor Orb, will clash for the 3rd time in 5 weeks along with 12 other top 3yo’s in Saturday’s final triple crown contest of 2013 in the $1,000,000, GI Belmont Stakes, going a herculean 1 1/2 mile over that immense Belmont Park main track.
Orb, at 3/1, gets some very tepid casting as the M/L favorite for this year’s edition, mostly off his GI Florida Derby and GI Kentucky Derby wins! He did finish a tired looking 4th to Oxbow in the GI Preakness Stakes back on May 18th at Pimlico as he couldn’t find the accelerator in the Preakness stretch! But to his defense, the Pimlico main surface was sluggish all Preakness weekend long down there and was the main factor for one of the slowest Preakness winning times of the past 30 years!
Oxbow, at 5/1, won that strangely timed GI Preakness dust-up 3 weeks ago going all the way around that 1 3/16 mile course on the front-end. It was the second time in the past 3 runnings where someone went wire to wire to win the Preakness. A mile and a half is a much tougher distance to wire however!
Other Derby runners returning;
Revolutionary, at 9/2, finished 3rd in the Churchill slop in this year’s Derby run. He then sat out the GI Preakness to ready himself for this Saturday’s 1 1/2 mile Test of the Champion here at Belmont Park. He claim to horse racing fame is a big win in this year’s $million GII Louisiana Derby back on March 30th!
Golden Soul, at 10/1, was runner-up in this year’s Kentucky Derby with solid closing run over a rain-soaked Churchill Downs main track that day. So did he close into a tiring and mud laden crew or is he indeed a deep closer at the longer distances just ripe for a Belmont Stakes race?
Overanalyze, at 12/1, is the winner of the GI Arkansas Derby then finished 11th in the Kentucky Derby is now well rested for this 1 1/2 mile “Test of the Champion”!
Palace Malice, at 15/1, was the head trouble maker in this year’s GI Kentucky Derby who set all those crazy hot early factions only to fade to 12th that day, looks to be back for more GI excitement here on June 8th!
Will Take Charge, at 20/1, was 8th in the derby and 7th in the Preakness will also be running for the D. Wayne Lukas team along with his stable mate Oxbow!
Frac Daddy, at 30/1, popped up late as a Belmont Stakes runner this year. He finished 16th in the Derby slop but did come a fast closing 2nd in the GI Arkansas Derby 2 back!
Vyjack, at 20/1, came 18th in the 2013 “Run for the Roses” made his 3yo racing bones here in the Big Apple with wins in the GII Jerome Stakes and GIII Gotham Stakes. He did finished a very decent 3rd in the GI Wood Memorial 2-back before his very lackluster 18th placing in this year’s Kentucky Derby!
New Shooters are,
Freedom Child, at 8/1, winner of the GII Peter Pan Stakes (the Belmont Stakes Prep) is a definite entry in Belmont Park’s big 3yo dance of the season!
Something for the Ladies this year,
Unlimited Budget, at 8/1, was 3rd in the Kentucky Oaks this year is out for a run with the boys here on June 8th. She’ll be the first 3yo filly since Rags to Riches bested all-time money winner Curlin in a 2007 Belmont Stakes stretch duel for the ages!
Incognito at 20/1 carries a lofty pedigree but not a graded win yet, Giant Finish and Midnight Taboo, both at 30/1 rounds out this field for the 145th “Run for the Carnations” here at Belmont Park this Saturday!
So, a big field with no really clear favorite is usually a sign of big exotics payouts to come. So box up those exotics plays to at least catch a piece of one of them and look for solid but unloved entries out on the Belmont board with the pedigree to go the distance to add some spice to those exotics plays!
Remember – Da Tara in 08, Summer Bird in 2009, Drosselmeyer in 2010 and Ruler on Ice in 2011 were all recent long shot, double-digits to 1 winner’s here!
Note – The Saturday weather forecast isn’t very pretty right now with an 50% chance of rain with heavy rain on Friday and Friday night! Might be a very soggy day at Belmont Park for this 3rd and final test of the 2013 Triple crown series!
Pick are – 5,7,9,13 on a exacta box, with 2,3 or 14 added to the final super spot!
