Monmouth Park opens May 11 Thoroughbred racing returns to the Jersey Shore with the opening of Monmouth Park on May 11.
A tradition since 1870, Monmouth Park opens its 2013 season with free Grandstand and half-price Clubhouse admission. First post is 12:50 p.m.
On May 12, the racetrack is offering a Mother’s Day Brunch in the Dining Terrace. All ladies receive free track admission.
Horses began arriving at Monmouth Park as early as April 12 for this year’s meeting. The season will run through Oct. 6.
Monmouth Park will have 61 racing dates in 2013. In May, the track will be open for live racing on Saturdays and Sundays. Starting May 31, the track will present live racing on Fridays through Sundays, as well as holidays through Labor Day weekend when it goes back to a Saturday and Sunday schedule through Oct. 6. Post time is set for 12:50 p.m. The meet will once again be highlighted by the $1 million Haskell Invitational, set for July 28. The Haskell has become one of the premier races for 3-year-olds.
Trainer Bob Baffert has won the last three Haskells with Lookin At Lucky (2010), Coil (2011) and Paynter (2012), and he will try for No. 4 this year. He holds the record for the most wins by a trainer.
Other graded stakes highlights include the United Nations Stakes on July 6; the Iselin on Aug. 18; and the Molly Pitcher, which will be one of five graded stakes events on Haskell Day.
The United Nations Stakes is one of the Breeder’s Cup Challenge series races. The Cup Finals are at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. on Nov. 2.
