Shooter - How much shorter is the stretch? Doesn't that hurt the horses that close?

rg pimlico stretch is like 1150 feet i think.
i know churchill is 1235 feet.

The shorter stretch at Pimlico can be a challenge for some horses especially those coming from Churchill Downs. All and all though, Pimlico is a very fair racetrack. As pointed out in the article, these crazy notions of tighter turns and a speed-favoring racetrack are simply not true. Great horses should have no issues adapting. Orb in particular should have no problems. Long striding horses like him tend to do well at Pimlico. I expect him to be much closer to the pace in the Preakness as opposed to in the Derby. A very versatile horse indeed.

I just watched the Secretariat thing on ESPN Classics and there is Penny Tweedy saying how they were worried about the tight turns there at Pimlico and others opinined how BOLD the move he made there was even more spectacular because of the tighter turns...Elite thinks the banking of the turns used to be something that may have changed but was the original reason for the so called myth...Also the length of the stretch compared to Churchill is probably THE biggest reason as it would have to hurt closers in general next to Churchill...Usually the Preakness is a thinned out field next to the derby obviously and the pretenders are fewer. A stronger horse than the rest who closes can get up there despite the so called myths.
