I just watched this again (because of the Palace Malice blinkers controversy) so I thought I would post it for easy reference. Would someone please correct me if I'm wrong - If a horse is being restrained, and doesn't want to be, wouldn't he be throwing his head around and wouldn't the jockey be more upright? I don't see either of those things.

You are correct RG! Many horses do toss their heads or become "rank" when resisting the restraint of the jockey. While I was initially critical of Mike Smith's ride on Palace Malice, upon furthef review of the race, I have changed my opinion. What happened in my view is that Palace Malice broke sharply under the blinkers and was contending for a lead that seemingly no one else wanted, so Smith made a split second decision to go for it. Once PM made the lead however, he just took off and Smith let him go instead of fighting him. It wasn't exactly a sound ride but it was more a situation of the horse doing what he wanted to do than anything else.

I will tell you something I noticed when I went back and watched a replay of this race, which im sure will catch the wrath of a certain someone when he hears it. javas war was not given a bad ride. nor was he rushed to recover or get the rail. and he received no worse of a trip then any other slow breaking horse would in a 20 horse field. in fact the more I watch this horse, the less impressed I get with him. in fact he was basically the ONLY runner in the field who was towards the rear of the field who didn't make a big run. sorry but after multiple hours of scouring the tapes here at CBU our proffesors have come to the conclusion that javas war sucks!!

No worries Cait. Elite can't respond to something silly like this. Java still has the same Horesflesh Rating he had before the race. I don't know what they see over there at Stevie Wonder U.

what was i thinking? this morning those stupid smileys are giving me a headache lol
e1 - everyone has an opinion - that's why racing is cool - the passion, drama etc. - if horses ran to form or one method was perfect, it would be boring - sometimes we forget horses are living, breathing animals - not programmed robots - they have good days, bad days -

Exactly cait. Nothing personifies the flesh blood aspect (especially the flesh) more so than Quantums. We are not like these new pseudo scientists with their charts and beyers and pc's. Nor are we arithmetic freaks, trip charters and stat clingers like many of the old school. Quantums is a living breathing entitiy all it's own.
