I'm sure this will change a lot but as of the day after: From the Derby Orb Will Take Charge Oxbow Goldencents Mylute Itsmyluckyday Didn't Run in Derby Departing Governor Charlie Fear the Kitten Bellarmine LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, came out of the race in good condition, trainer Shug McGaughey said Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, and he will continue his bid to be the first Triple Crown winner in 35 years when he makes his next start in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 18. “I can’t wait to get there,” McGaughey said at Barn 43. McGaughey is not one to oversell his horses, but his confidence in Orb is radiating off him. He has repeatedly remarked that the reason Orb was even in the Derby was because of how he kept moving forward this winter at Gulfstream Park, and McGaughey said he believed Orb could continue his top form coming back in two weeks in the Preakness. “The thing that has amazed me is how well he’s come out of his races,” McGaughey said. “He hasn’t been overcooked. I’d be disappointed if he didn’t run the same as he did yesterday.” There has not been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. “I’d like the target on me. I can take it,” McGaughey said matter-of-factly. “I’m enjoying this experience. “This is a position I’ve wanted to be in for 30 some-odd years.” McGaughey, 62, called his first Derby win “a huge thrill.” “It’s been a whirlwind last 10 or 12 hours,” he said. McGaughey, his wife, Alison, and other family and friends went to dinner Saturday night at the popular Pat’s Steak House. According to Alison, the celebratory party didn’t break up until 3 a.m. “The whole thing’s been surreal,” Alison McGaughey said. “You think you’re in shock. I think when we get home to New York and sit down it will sink in.” Orb got a Beyer Speed Figure of 104. Orb left Churchill Downs by van at 9:30 a.m. Sunday about 15 hours after he crossed the wire first in the Derby. He was flown later Sunday to New York, where McGaughey is based at Belmont Park from spring until fall. He also keeps horses at Saratoga. As of Sunday morning, McGaughey said he envisioned giving Orb a workout at Belmont Park on the Monday or Tuesday preceding the Preakness – nine or 10 days following the Derby – and would van to Pimlico on that Tuesday, May 14. “I want to get there, settle in, school him in the paddock,” McGaughey said. As of Sunday, it appeared just a handful of horses exiting the Derby would challenge Orb in the Preakness, including the D. Wayne Lukas-trained duo of Oxbow, who finished sixth, and Will Take Charge, who was eighth. Goldencents, 17th in the Derby, also is likely to run in the Preakness. Mylute (fifth) and Itsmyluckyday (15th) are possible. Departing, winner of the Grade 3 Illinois Derby, is a probable starter, according to information supplied to Pimlico by trainer Al Sta. Jr. According to Stall, Claiborne Farm principal Seth Hancock told him in a text at 9 a.m. Sunday before going to church that he was leaning toward running. Heat Press, who finished second in the Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico on April 27, is considered unlikely to try the Preakness by trainer Graham Motion. Trainer Todd Pletcher said he would not take any of his five Derby runners to the Preakness. He said Revolutionary (third) and Overanalyze (11th) would likely be pointed to the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes on June 8. Verrazano, who finished 14th while suffering his first career loss, emerged from the race with a gash on his left hock. Pletcher said the injury did not require stitches. “He’s had five races in a little more than four months, so we’ll back up a little and focus on the summer,” Pletcher said. While it cannot be certain when the injury happened, the only time in the race it appeared that a horse ran up on the heels of Verrazano was at the top of the stretch, when the rallying Will Take Charge had to alter course behind the tiring Verrazano. Horses who did not run in the Derby but could race in the Preakness include Bellarmine, Departing, Fear the Kitten, Govenor Charlie, and Heat Press. www.drf.com/news/preakness-kentucky-derby-winner-orb-great-shape-triple-crowns-second-leg

We'll have a solid field for the Preakness and a much more sensible pace scenario. Departing will be the biggest danger for Orb who will no doubt be a prohibitive favorite.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Heat Press as Plank probably would love to have an entry. Lukas has always done well at Pimlico. And................somewhere.....................need to find that little known Md horse.........................maybe Dynamic Strike trained by the wonderful Richard Small - DS had a miserable Tesio trip - not breaking and taking the "grandstand route" - Too bad Abstraction wasn't nominated. 120K a lot to put up against Orb From the Baltimore Sun: Preakness field begins to take shape By Chris Korman 5:49 p.m. EDT, May 5, 2013 LOUISVILLE, KY. — This year, Doug O’Neill and his assistants sat in the office at a barn in the far corner of the Churchill Downs backside. Few reporters dropped by, and O’Neill was not asked repeatedly to relive the running of the Kentucky Derby a day before. Last year’s winning trainer, with I’ll Have Another, O’Neill instead convened with his robust team to discuss plans for the 138th Preakness Stakes, scheduled for May 18 at Pimlico. Their Derby horse, Goldencents, finished 17th. O’Neill was undeterred. “Not worried about him too much,” he said. “Just didn't fire. We still love this horse and think he's got a good future. “If he stays OK, we’ll be at Preakness.” The colt is one of five horses pointed definitely toward the second leg of the Triple Crown, including Derby winner Orb. At least a dozen other horses are under consideration. The 14-horse field is likely to shift as trainers and owners evaluate their options, but here’s a look at the possible entrants. The third, fourth and fifth finishers in the Kentucky Derby are not planning on racing in Baltimore. Surprise runner-up Golden Soul will rest for the Belmont, trainer Dallas Stewart said. “At first we thought for sure we'd go on to the Preakness,” he said. “But the more we thought about it, the more we thought training him for five weeks and getting him in the Belmont was the right thing to. I'll leave the door open to the Preakness, but that's not the plan as of right now. If he tears up the barn and looks ready to go, I’ll make that call.” Revolutionary, the top finisher of trainer Todd Pletcher’s five Derby horses, has also been pointed to the Belmont. None of the quintuplet will head to Baltimore, he said. Normandy Invasion is eyeing the late-summer stakes races for 3-year-olds. Mylute, who made a run but flattened to finish fifth, is under consideration for the Preakness. He’s ridden by Rosie Napravnik, who began her career in Maryland. D. Wayne Lukas does plan on brining his two Derby horses, Oxbow (sixth) and Will Take Charge (eighty) to Pimlico. Itsmyluckyday (15th) trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. said it was “60-40” his colt would run in the Preakness. Then, there are the shooters. Fear the Kitten, an also-eligible for the Derby, should be considered “possible,” said trainer Mike Maker. Illinois Derby winner Departing will run, trainer Al Stall told Pimlico officials. The Illinois Derby was left off of Churchill Down’s new system for determining Derby qualifiers, so officials at Hawthorne moved the race back two weeks to turn it into a Preakness prep instead. Bob Baffert, a five-time winner of the Preakness, is strongly considering running Govenor Charlie, who he pulled from Derby consideration last week. He could also run another Derby-eligible colt, Code West, or Power Broker. Bellarmine, who beat Code West by a neck in an allowance race here this week, is also a possibility. He’s trained by Ken McPeek, who ran two horses in the Derby and began his career as a hot walker for Orb’s trainer, Shug McGaughey. The winner of Pimlico’s premier Preakness prep race, the Federico Tesio Stakes, is unlikely to run. Abstraction was not Triple Crown nominated — which would have cost $600 before Jan. 26 and $6,000 before March 23 – and his connections would need to pay $100,000 in addition to the standard $20,000 in starter fees to be in the race. Heat Press, the colt owned by Under Armour founder Kevin Plank’s Sagamore Farm, has also not bee pointed toward the Preakness. He finished second at the Tesio but appears to be slightly behind the field. Plank, though, has worked to have starters in Triple Crown races and has not been afraid to race a long shot. Orb is likely to be a heavy favorite at the Preakness, with Mylute, Departed and Governor Charlie as possible second choices. O’Neill bucked a recent trend by bringing I’ll Have Another to Baltimore days after the Derby. This year, he plans to fly Goldencents to New York on Monday and then van to Maryland. His jockey, Kevin Krigger, could become the first black jockey to win the Preakness since Willie Simms in 1898 and only the seventh to ride in it. lolol lukas!! i love how every year this jackoff finds a non competitive horse like oxbow and finds it necessary to run them into the ground by running them in all three legs. any of you people who bash oneil, baffert, or anyone else, and then root for "the coach" are crazy. hes broken down and ruined more horses then anyone in the history of racing. hes horrible!!

Its such an annoyance when trainers enter horses (mostly under the owner's demand) when they simply don't belong.
The total list according to HRN is as follows:
Normandy Invasion (belongs) Vyjack (doesn't belong) Fear the Kitten (doesn't belong) Itsmyluckyday (doesn't belong) Mylute (belongs) Orb (belongs) Goldencents (belongs) Will Take Charge (belongs) Oxbow (belongs) Bellarmine (belongs) Code West (doesn't belong) Governor Charlie (belongs) Capo Bastone (doesn't belong) Abstraction (belongs) Departing (belongs)
15 horses -- of which only 1/3 really shouldn't even be under any sort of consideration for the race. Capo Bastone is a 1 turn closing specialist, Code West is 1/2 the horse he was earlier in his career, Itsmyluckyday is tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired something I pointed out before the Derby horse has been in training nearly nonstop since his career began, and Fear the Kitten isn't enough horse to even come close to winning. Vyjack wants no part of anything over 1 1/16th tens of thousands of fans will only hurt his chances hes a nervous type.
Of the legitimate contenders:
Normandy Invasion -- maybe moved early and could run big if he is 100% Oxbow -- ran great for being on the pace to finish 6th Will Take Charge -- all sorts of trouble in Derby and still finished 8th Bellarmine -- improving colt, will see how he handles G1 Co. Mylute -- 9f may be his max, but has a chance at 9.5 Governor Charlie -- until injury was my top Derby choice, has talent Abstraction -- unlikely for race, but does everything right Departing -- watch his Illinois Derby, he belongs Goldencents -- don't think he wants to be behind horses, nor wants mud, deserves another shot Orb -- Derby winner

Yesterday Vyjack and Normany Invasion added. Today Bellarmine is out, This may be a larger field than expected! Bellarmine Won't Compete in Preakness Stakes Magdalena Racing's Bellarmine, winner of an entry-level allowance race for 3-year-olds at Churchill Downs May 4, won't compete in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), trainer Ken McPeek said May 7. Bellarmine, a Kentucky-bred by Magna Graduate , was on the early list of possible starters for the Preakness, which will be run May 18. In the Churchill allowance race he defeated Code West, who finished a close second in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) earlier this year. "Bellarmine is no-go for the Preakness," McPeek said via Twitter. Meanwhile, the Maryland Jockey Club said Goldencents, who finished 17th of 19 in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), arrived at Pimlico Race Course at about 1:30 a.m. EDT May 7. The Into Mischief colt was the first to arrive at Pimlico in advance of the Preakness. Cannot agree with Vic or anyone else wondering why people are taking shots here. To say a horse doesn't belong with this bunch is silly imo. If I had a sharp claimer I might take a shot. No Easy Goers here. The more the merrier imo.

the coach also bankrupted gene klein and handfull of other multi millionaires, broke down how many top notch 2 yr. olds even before the drug problem was prevelant as it is today, and never really trained any of those horses other then to plan their schedules and over rave them, as all of his assistants were the ones doing the training. lukas is like a pimp. hes a great PR man who couldnt train a billy goat to eat grass. the one thing he was great at was spotting a good horse. he was a wonderful judge of horseflesh, but no trainer. and believe me, california racing was just fine before lukas got here. lukas couldnt hold charlie whittinghams jock!!

QH, tell me exactly what trainer 'trains" horses anymore these days? Baffert, Pletcher, Lukas, O'neill, Asmussen are nothing schedilers. You mean to tell me these guys have time to actually spend time with every one of their horses in the barn? No way. Go rake a peek at larry jones, maker, shug. They actually do work. Everyone gets caught up in the talk about how great those guys in california are. How many horses baffert ran into the ground in the last month?..........I thought so.

im not the one who brought up ca.. you are. and here you are bashing these others, but praising lukas for doing the same thing? hes the one that started it!! i never said any or none of the names you mentioned were great trainers. what i said was lukas wasnt. he was the original PR man who got others to do the dirty work while he sat behind a desk figuring out ways to drop another 10 million of some poor schlepps money on the next green monkey. and well before lukas showed his face in the thoroughbred game after leaving the quarters ( where every record he ever had was broken later by baffert, blane, and paul jones btw) california was on the map with real trainers like charlie, laz, and many others.

and everyone has a hard on for baffert now a days and wants to lynch him for doing the same thing these others have been doing for the last 25 years since lukas started it. and do you know why? because he wins races. he is succesful and the hot topic. yes he has broken down a lot of horses, but ask anyone on here and they will tell you that the horses are not as sound as they used to be because of the weak breeding. if lukas was dealing with this weak bloodlines that these horses have now, he would have broke down twice as many as he did. im not saying the trainers today are not at fault also, but the breeding plays a big part in it. and lukas NEVER won the amopunt of races baffert does now. and lukas had way more horses to work with. he had stables at every major track at the same time, not just california. look at the percentages. bafferts carerr numbers tower over lukas's in win pct.

Agree with wiz here..Wayne was the original cancer cell. Without Wayne we don't see a BoB or Todd...Asmussen still smells like he's been in the barn at least..I consider him head and shoulders above the two idiots, hands on wise.

Did Todd start with quarterhorses? I don't think so and I also don't think he pushes 3 year olds as hard as Baffert and Lukas. He has a lot of breakdowns and injuries because he has so many horses. I wonder what the overall % is for injured 3 year olds and which trainers exceed it?

The Coach has added Titletown Five. He has quite a Preakness history - 5 Winners and adding these 3 makes 40 runners.. Lukas Adds Third Preakness Contender Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas confirmed May 7 that Titletown Five will be entered in the May 18 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico Race Course. This would give Lukas three starters in the race for the second time in his career. Oxbow, sixth in the May 4 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr.I), and Will Take Charge, eighth, are also scheduled to compete in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. Lukas decided to add Titletown Five to the roster of Preakness candidates after the Tiznow colt worked four furlongs in :47 3/5 the morning of May 7 at Churchill Downs, fifth fastest of 35 moves recorded at the distance. Titletown Five has a record of 1-2-1 from seven starts for a partnership group that includes Lukas, Paul Hornung, Ed Martin, and William Davis. In his most recent outing, he was fourth in Churchill's Derby Trial Stakes (gr. III) April 27. "We flirted with the idea of going into the Kentucky Derby and late additions bumped us from that," Lukas said. "He has been doing so well lately and today just highlighted that. It was a brilliant work and a great gallop out. I just thought that it was a good spot maybe to try him. He's an exceptional horse. He's very talented with good tactical speed. He'll make some noise there." Lukas saddled Editor's Note (third), Victory Speech (fifth), and Prince of Thieves (seventh) in the 1996 Preakness. If all three starters go to the post this year, it will extend his Preakness record to 40 competitors, including winners Codex (1980), Tank's Prospect (1985), Tabasco Cat (1994), Timber Country (1995), and Charismatic (1999).
