Oh no - another one. What a sad after Derby day. She was so young and had such potential. This is what I hate about racing.
RIP Live Lively
Live Lively, Davona Dale Winner, Euthanized
Live Lively, the 3-year-old Medaglia d'Oro filly owned by Lee Lewis, was euthanized May 4.
After a morning work at Belmont Park, the grade II winning filly suffered fractures to both the sesamoids in her left foreleg. The Mark Hennig trainee, preparing for the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) at Pimlico Race Course May 17, had recorded a time of 1:01.66 for the five-furlong drill.
"She breezed beautifully this morning, came home in 23 and change, galloped out three-quarters in 1:13 and a couple," said Hennig. "Just before pulling up she broke her sesamoids in her left front just as she switched to her left lead."
The decision to euthanize the filly was made after x-rays revealed injuries that were too severe for treatment. "It was just not one of those things we could do anything about, unfortunately," Hennig said.
Winning her second start in a 5 1/2 -furlong maiden race at Aqueduct Racetrack last November, the filly went on to capture her 2013 debut at Gulfstream Park in a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race. Stretching out in distance and moving up to stakes company, Live Lively gave an impressive performance in the 1 1/16-mile Davona Dale Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Feb. 23, finishing 1 1/2 lengths ahead of grade I winner Dreaming of Julia.
A distant second behind Dreaming of Julia in the Gulfstream Oaks (gr. II) March 30, her connections opted to pass on entry in the May 3 Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Never finishing out of the money, Live Lively achieved a race record of 3-1-1 in five starts and earned $280,300.
Live Lively was bred in Kentucky by Edward A. Cox. She was out of the Smoke Glacken mare Glacken's Gal.
