Close Hatches , at 6/1 who gave a great winning performance in that GII Gazelle Stakes and at 15/1 is Flashy Gray who could not keep up with Unlimited Budget, in the Fair Grounds Oaks stretch last out and settled for 2nd!
Bob Baffert, with no Derby runners this year, so he will put all his 2013 Derby weekend eggs into his Midnight Lucky , basket at 9/2 on Friday. This one set a track record at Sunland Park last out in the 1 1/16 mile Sunland Oaks in 1:41 dead flat, but before you uh and ah here, 3 track records were broken that day over the Sunland main. Must be the shoes “Right”?
Rose to Gold , at 15/1 represents good value here as she is a double graded winner in the 2 Oaklawn preps for this race, the GIII Honeybee and GIII Fantasy Stakes. She’s not quite in the same class as some of these others but we’ll be using her in our exotics thinking on Friday!
If all the above top 3yo filly talent doesn’t have you anticipating this year’s GI Kentucky Oaks, well how about the 2012, 2yo Female HOY in Beholder, at 7/2, who comes in here off a pair of GI wins in the Las Virgenes Stakes and Santa Anita Oaks at Santa Anita Park this winter! Gravitas indeed!
So the dirty little secret at Churchill Downs this weekend maybe that this year’s GI Kentucky Oaks is a better race, quality-wise than the Derby itself and maybe a better race to watch as well!
We’ll see, but in the mean time here is the field for this year’s edition of $1,000,000, GI Kentucky Oaks!
