Which post position would you choose for your Derby horse to break from and why? We all know that in the Kentucky Derby sometimes the draw can be the key to the race. See Union Rags from last year.
If I had things my way, I would love to see my top pick, Orb break from post 9. The reason being that breaking in the middle of the field would give a horse like him enough time to hopefully tuck in and get a good position just behind the first flight of runners going into the first turn.
And with not a lot of speed signed on for this year's Derby, the last place you're gonna wanna be is drawn way outside when the field likely will will be bunched up in the early going instead of strung out for a good 18-20 lengths.
This would put Orb in a perfect position to launch his run at the leaders going into the long home stretch at Churchill.

hesnotmyprez, hmmm where has the Eliteone seen that name before? Welcome aboard my man....I'll Have Another had to work extra hard but had the horseflesh. It depends on the style of the horse and what his opponents are situated with. For Java's War it's not to much of a biggie. He'll be loafing way back avoiding that first logjam at the clubhouse turn. 6-10 would be ok..

I'm not the handicapper that many of you are, but I've given this some thought, mostly based on what I've seen the last few years.
I thought I read somewhere that the inside is bad because of where the gate's placed (on a curve?)? I also used to think outside in the auxiliary gate wasn't good, but Animal Kingdom was #16, I'll Have Another #19 and Big Brown #20.
I guess it depends somewhat on a horse's running style. With this group, Java's War, Frac Daddy,Normandy Invasion might be ok with the outside. A lot of the people on TV say Revolutionary likes the inside?
I would say the outside of the first gate - 11-14 would be good. If it rains and there's a track bias, or if the track is running very fast, those seem to be gates where a jockey could go for position.
