Summer Hit Among 10 Entered In $100,000 San Francisco Mile
The ultra-consistent Summer Hit heads a strong field of 10 runners in the Grade 3 $100,000 San Francisco Mile, which will have its 63rd running Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.
The SF Mile, Northern California’s top turf event, will be the sixth race on a nine-race program and kick off the $100,000-guaranteed All Grass Late Pick 4. It costs only 50 cents to play the grassy Pick 4, which challenges fans to pick the winners of the final four races on the card (6-9).
Gates open at 10 a.m. and players looking to get an edge on Saturday’s program should arrive early as Golden Gate Fields is offering a free handicapping seminar that will be conducted by Brad Free, one of the leading handicappers for Daily Racing Form. The seminar begins at 11 a.m. in the Paddock Pub, which is located on the track level near the winner’s circle.
Summer Hit is a stakes-winning son of Bertrando who has never finished out of the money. Purchased privately by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer after an impressive debut victory, Summer Hit has six wins, a second and two thirds in nine career starts.
Summer Hit is a versatile sort who owns wins on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta surface and on the grass courses at both Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita. Summer Hit has recorded wins at three different distances – six furlongs, at “about” 6 1/2 furlongs, and one mile.
Summer Hit is 2-for-2 racing a mile on turf and enters the SF Mile off a dominating
3 1/4-length victory in a mile allowance on the Santa Anita lawn on March 31. In his lone start on Golden Gate Fields’ Lakeside Turf Course, Summer Hit scored a front-running victory in the one-mile, $100,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes last year.
Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze rode Summer Hit to victory in the Silky Sullivan and he’ll be aboard the California-bred again in the SF Mile. Summer Hit and Baze will break from post position six.
In addition to Summer Hit, the SF Mile lineup features five other stakes-winners: Hudson Landing, Control Seeker, Gallant Son, Grand Berry, and Tribal Tribute.
Hudson Landing is the defending SF Mile champion as he upset 1-2 favorite Jeranimo by a half-length in the 2012 running. Trained by Blaine Wright, Hudson Landing is a multiple stakes-winner of $487,648.
Control Seeker, a 7-year-old gelding with $375,188 in earnings, captured a pair of stakes on the summer fair circuit last year. Trained by Keith Nations, Control Seeker won a prep for the SF Mile on April 6, taking a one-mile allowance race on the grass by
1 1/4 lengths over multiple stakes-winner Positive Response and Hudson Landing.
Gallant Son, third in last year’s SF Mile, is a seven-time stakes winner trained by Frank Lucarelli. Gallant Son will be seeking his second stakes victory at the meeting as he scored a 7-1 upset in the six-furlong Albany Stakes on Feb. 18. A 7-year-old horse, Gallant Son has earned $445,128 in 34 career starts.
Grand Berry won Group 1 and Group 2 races in his native Argentina but is seeking his first U.S. victory for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella. Tribal Tribute, trained by Tim McCanna, won the Robert Dupret Derby on the grass at Santa Rosa last year and is 1-for-1 on the lawn at Golden Gate Fields.
The field for the SF Mile, in post position order, is as follows: Tigah, Alonso Quinonez rides; Grand Berry, Alejandro Gomez; Hudson Landing, Juan Hernandez; Tribal Tribute, Frank Alvarado; Barney Rebel, Saul Arias; Summer Hit, Baze; Gallant Son, Dennis Carr; Coach Bob, William Antongeorgi III; Control Seeker, Francisco Duran; and Charlemagne Wood, Abel Cedillo. All of the starters carry 122 pounds.
First post is 12:45 p.m. and fans that received a SF Mile T-shirt last Saturday will receive free club house admission if they wear the shirt to the track this Saturday. Post time for the SF Mile is 3:15 p.m.
