Is Baffert considering Power Broker for the Derby? Why? LOL
Oaks contender Midnight Lucky outworks Power Broker
Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman's undefeated Kentucky Oaks contender Midnight Lucky worked six furlongs in 1:12 after the morning renovation break at Churchill Downs Monday.
With Mike Smith aboard, and working in company with Derby possible Power Broker, Midnight Lucky started a couple lengths behind the colt, drew even at the top of the stretch, and finished a couple of lengths in front. Both are trained by Bob Baffert.
Power Broker, currently 26th on the Derby points list, completed his move on the fast main track in 1:12 4/5.
Fractions on the work for Midnight Lucky were :23 2/5 and :34 2/5, and she galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25 3/5.
A 7 1/4-length debut winner at Santa Anita in February, the Midnight Lute filly romped in the Sunland Park Oaks in track-record time last out.
Stablemate Fiftyshadesofhay, owned by the same partnership as Midnight Lucky, galloped 1 3/8 miles under exercise rider Peter Hutton. The Baffert trainee was a convincing winner of the Santa Ysabel in January, but has been no match for champion Beholder when placing in the Las Virgenes and Santa Anita Oaks.
Following the track's morning renovation break at 8:30 a.m. (EDT), undefeated Fair Grounds Oaks winner Unlimited Budget and Gulfstream Oaks winner Dreaming of Julia jogged around the Louisville, Kentucky, oval for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Regular exercise rider Patti Krotenko was aboard Unlimited Budget and Humberto Zamora guided Dreaming of Julia.
Also for Pletcher, Bourbonette Oaks winner Silsita jogged and Gazelle runner-up Princess of Sylmar galloped. Both made their appearances prior to the renovation break.
Calumet Farm's Broken Spell galloped 1 1/2 miles after the morning renovation break under exercise rider Edvin Vargas. The Wayne Lukas filly is winless from five starts this campaign.
Naveed Chowhan's Seaneen Girl, guided by exercise rider Rocky Seely, also galloped after the break. Victorious in Churchill's Golden Rod last November, the Bernie Flint pupil was third in her reappearance in the Fair Grounds Oaks.
Bill Mott's Oaks pair of Close Hatches and Flashy Gray had different routines on Monday.
West Point Thoroughbreds and Tom Keithley's Flashy Gray, runner-up in both the Fair Grounds Oaks and Honeybee, galloped after the break under exercise rider Penny Gardiner.
Juddmonte Farms' Close Hatches walked the shedrow a day after working a half-mile in :47 4/5. The unbeaten winner of the Gazelle is scheduled to return to the track Tuesday.
Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centrofanti's Rose to Gold, winner of the Fantasy and Honeybee, also walked Monday morning. Trainer Sal Santoro is scheduled to arrive in Louisville this afternoon from his base in South Florida.
