The Derby field is so big, I was wondering what people think about post positions? I know how a horse runs - in front or a closer - is part of the strategy. Is it considered bad to have a closer who draws inside? Or a frontrunner who draws outside? It seems that jockeys play a big role in big fields like the Dervby. Is that true?

Specifically to the Derby, the 1 is bad. Some trainers really like the first stall in the auxillary gate ( forgot what number that is) because there is a little "breathing room" without a horse directly to your inside. Also some posts are more of an advantage becaue of the way the field loads especially if your horse is jittery. You don't want to be loading early and having to stand and wait a long time till the rest of the field loads in front of a huge noisy crowd. Generally speaking,if you draw inside with a big field, with the whole field angling over towards the rail after they leave the gate ,you run a greater risk of checking or taking up going into the first turn.

There are a number of factors that can go into determining how much weight to give to the post position draw, particularly in the KY Derby. Obviously a lot depends on the horse, but also the jock and how the race itself shapes up. Last year for instance, the No. 4 post most definitely cost Union Rags at the very least a better placing after his flat footed start. By contrast, the No. 19 post which normally would be considered a disadvantageous post actually helped IHA who had enough tactical speed early on to overcome it and get good position early. Ultimately, you just never know until they run the race.

I think it's a good question with 2 excellent answers! After the draw, let's discuss the post positions specifically. I do think jockeys always play an important role in any race - especially those with large fields,
