Pletcher looks strong for Kentucky Oaks By Marty McGee LEXINGTON, Ky. - Todd Pletcher not only holds a formidable hand for the Kentucky Derby with as many as five possible starters, but he might be even stronger with what he has for the Kentucky Oaks. Pletcher figures to have two of the top choices for the May 3 Oaks in Dreaming of Julia and Unlimited Budget, both of whom were out for half-mile workouts Sunday morning over a fast main track at Churchill Downs. Dreaming of Julia, going solo, went in 49 seconds, while Unlimited Budget went in 48.60 seconds in company with yet another Oaks-bound Pletcher filly, Silsita.Like the Derby, eligibility into the Oaks is being determined for the first time this year by a points system. After the Beaumont Stakes was run Sunday at Keeneland, there were no more points races for fillies only. As of Monday, these are the 14 fillies atop the Oaks points list: Beholder, Rose to Gold, Unlimited Budget, Dreaming of Julia, Close Hatches, Live Lively, Flashy Gray, Princess of Sylmar, Fiftyshadesofhay, Midnight Lucky, Silsita, Manuka Honey, Seaneen Girl, and Promise Me More. Iotapa was declared from consideration by John Sadler over the weekend, while Emollient, the runaway winner of the April 6 Ashland at Keeneland, could run if so desired, although trainer Bill Mott said this weekend in Florida that he was likely to run only Close Hatches and Flashy Gray.As for Pletcher and his chances at a sweep, only twice has a trainer won the Oaks and Derby in the same year: Herbert “Derby Dick” Thompson in 1933 and Ben Jones in 1952. www.drf.com/news/keeneland-pletcher-looks-strong-kentucky-oaks

Why is the Oaks limited to 14 since the Derby was upped to 20? Derby should be 14-16 limit also.
after all what's good for the gander...................

Let's be fair - Let the colts run in the Oaks LOL The US is not Europe or Australia LOL We could learn something from them though. Horses overseas race far beyond the middle of their 3 year old season - even with fillies racing against the boys routinely. I don't really understand the points though. I guess I didn't realize Derby points were applicable to Oaks entry.

Good question Cait!
And just to pile on, why isn't the Oaks run at a mile and 1/4 same as the Derby? If we've learned anything over the past few years, it's that the girls are more than capable of competing at the same level as the boys. In other countries the Filly Classics are contested under the same conditions as their male counterparts. So why not here?

4/23 Broken Spell Ruled Out of KY Oaks Calumet Farm's Broken Spell was ruled out of the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) the morning of April 23 by trainer D. Wayne Lukas. "She is going to go in the turf race," Lukas said, referring to the May 3 Edgewood Presented by Forcht Bank at Churchill Downs. "We think she is better on grass and the Oaks is a damned tough race." In preparation for the Edgewood, Broken Spell, a daughter of Broken Vow , worked a half-mile on the main track Tuesday in :50 2/5 under Edvin Vargas. She recorded fractions of :12 2/5, :24 3/5, and :37 1/5, and galloped out five furlongs in 1:05 1/5. Trainer Bob Baffert also reported that Fiftyshadesofhay won't run in the Oaks. "But she could go in the (May 3) Eight Belles (at Churchill) or (May 17) Black-Eyed Susan (at Pimlico)," Baffert said. Upcoming Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) workers: The Bill Mott-trained Flashy Gray is likely to work April 27; Close Hatches is scheduled April 28. The Sal Santoro-trained Rose to Gold is slated to work April 27. In other Oaks news, Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman's Midnight Lucky came out of her April 22 six-furlong work of 1:12 in good order according to Jim Barnes, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert. Magdalena Racing's Pure Fun galloped Tuesday morning at Keeneland and was scheduled to leave the Lexington track shortly after noon for the van ride to Churchill Downs. Trainer Ken McPeek said Pure Fun, seventh against males in the April 20 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. III), would be on the track at Churchill April 24. McPeek said Julien Leparoux would have the mount in the Oaks. Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centrofanti's Rose to Gold galloped 1 1/2 miles under Denis Roberson on her first day back to the track since working a half-mile in :48 1/5 April 20. Roberson, who began galloping Rose to Gold at Oaklawn Park this winter, said trainer Sal Santoro would not be here until possibly next week. "He was supposed to be here yesterday, but he got delayed in Florida," said Roberson, who has horses of his own stabled at the nearby Trackside Training Center. "She was in my barn at Oaklawn and I started getting on her to help them out. "Down there, she'd gallop a mile and a half a day and would walk the day before she'd work, but last week galloped on Friday before working with Calvin (Borel) on Saturday. She will probably work again Saturday with Calvin and follow the same schedule." Stevens gains Oaks mount; Broken Spell ruled out Gary Stevens has been named to ride the Todd Pletcher-trained Silsita in the Kentucky Oaks. "Gary's form, since returning to the saddle after a seven-year hiatus from race riding, has been brilliant, as good as when he was in his prime," said Aron Wellman, president of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, which owns the Bourbonette Oaks winner. "After Gary breezed the filly at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning it sealed the deal. He and Silsita appeared to mesh really well and the enthusiasm and confidence Gary expressed about our filly post-work made it a no-brainer for Todd and I to name Gary to ride." Gary Stevens and Todd Pletcher have each won the Kentucky Oaks two times. Stevens won in 1986 with Tiffany Lass and in 1999 with Silverbulletday. Pletcher won in 2004 with Ashado and in 2007 with Rags to Riches. Broken Spell was ruled out of the Kentucky Oaks Tuesday morning by trainer D. Wayne Lukas. "She is going to go in the turf race," Lukas said, referring to the $150,000 Edgewood on May 3. "We think she is better on grass and the Oaks is a damned tough race." In preparation for the Edgewood, Broken Spell worked a half-mile on the main track Tuesday in :50 2/5 under Edvin Vargas. She recorded fractions of :12 2/5, :24 3/5 and :37 1/5 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:05 1/5. Fantasy winner Rose to Gold galloped 1 1/2 miles under Denis Roberson Tuesday on her first day back to the track since working a half-mile in :48 1/5 on Saturday. She will probably work again Saturday with Calvin and follow the same schedule." Sunland Oaks winner Midnight Lucky came out of her six-furlong work of 1:12 on Monday in good order according to Jim Barnes, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert. Pure Fun galloped Tuesday morning at Keeneland and was scheduled to leave that track shortly after noon for the van ride to Churchill Downs. Trainer Ken McPeek said Pure Fun, seventh against males in last Saturday's Lexington, would be on the track at Churchill Wednesday. McPeek said that Julien Leparoux would have the mount in the Oaks. www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=36131&from=656
