Back toThe Golden Slipper Overreach makes it five Golden Slippers for Sydney's leading lady, Gai Waterhouse Read more: www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/xxxxx-has-won-the-golden-slipper/story-fnect155-1226613854538#ixzz2PjvTKkpqGAI Waterhouse, trainer of the outstanding Overreach, remembers leaving Randwick trackwork last winter confident she had found her next Golden Slipper winner. "I immediately rang my owner, George Altomonte, and said his filly Overreach would win the Golden Slipper - I don't know if he believed me," she said yesterday. The trainer is used to making the big call - remember Pierro 12 months ago - and she is usually right. At Rosehill Gardens yesterday, Overreach lived up to her trainer's fearless forecast when she dominated her rivals to win the $3.5 million Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m). Waterhouse said she felt nervous only when Overreach was being loaded into the barriers. Once the field jumped - and her filly began brilliantly - the trainer relaxed and got to enjoy the race. "I knew as soon as she jumped so well that the race was as good as over," Waterhouse said. "She's been the best two-year-old all season. It was just a matter of getting some luck in running and I thought she would be too good for them. "I don't think I've trained a better two-year-old filly and certainly she is up there with my other Golden Skipper winners." Jim Cassidy, who rode third placegetter Sweet Idea, summed it up best after the race: "Overreach is brilliant and just better than the rest." Overreach, sensationally backed from $3.10 to $2.80 favourite, enjoyed the run of the race behind early leader Kuroshio before diving through on the inside to take the lead. She sprinted clear to win comfortably by 1 3/4 lengths from fast-finishing Sidestep ($11), with a length to Sweet Idea ($10). Guelph ran on late for fourth, just in front of Fast 'N' Rocking. Criterion's effort to run sixth after missing the start was outstanding.
