Reynaldothewizard works magic in Golden Shaheen
Zabeel Racing International's Reynaldothewizard continued his amazing renaissance as a seven-year-old by upsetting Saturday's Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, in a finish dominated by Carnival regulars. The four-length winner of the last prep, the Group 3 Mahab al Shimaal, went off at 9-1 against this deeper cast, but handled the class hike to remain perfect since adding blinkers. Reynaldothewizard was presenting multiple U.A.E. champion trainer Satish Seemar and jockey Richard Mullen their first career wins on a World Cup night.
As expected, American shippers Trinniberg and Private Zone argued the pace. Japanese hope Taisei Legend raced between them to make it a three-way scrum, before bowing out. Private Zone held on longer than his early rivals, but he too weakened at the top of the lane.
Reynaldothewizard, who had been drafting just behind the trailblazers, pounced in a well-timed move. Balmont Mast split foes and came charging, but too late, as Reynaldothewizard had a neck to spare at the line. He took 1:12.46 to cover about six furlongs, again underscoring the testing nature of Meydan's Tapeta on Saturday.
Defending champion Krypton Factor checked in another half-length back in third, edging Tamaathul by a head. United Color, Kavanagh, Gordon Lord Byron, the slow-starting Frederick Engels, Private Zone, Mental, Trinniberg, Taisei Legend and Reply rounded out the order of finish.
The result was a triumph for the March 9 Mahab al Shimaal, which produced the trifecta. Krypton Factor and Balmont Mast, the respective second and third behind Reynaldothewizard on Super Saturday, merely switched the minor awards in the main event.
Reynaldothewizard's biggest-ever coup advanced his resume to 18-7-1-2, $1,508,290. As a juvenile in 2008, the son of Speightstown was third in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special and 10th in the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity for Eoin Harty. After his fourth in the 2009 San Miguel in his sophomore bow, he found his home in allowance company. His move to Dubai, and transfer to Seemar, did not raise his sights.
A regular on the Meydan circuit since 2010, Reynaldothewizard had kept to the handicap ranks with mixed success, until adding blinkers. The equipment change led to a victory over Balmont Mast on January 24, sparking a step up to stakes company in the Mahab al Shimaal, and he has now won three straight in the headgear.
